W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: Windsor earns tie with nationally ranked Golden Hawks
Laurentian Voyageurs @ Ryerson Rams
An early goal by Kristen Horgan Smith was protected all the way up to the final whistle, as the Ryerson Rams defeated the Laurentian Lady Vees 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Lamport Stadium.
Ryerson started off the afternoon in similar fashion to Friday's contest with Nipissing, dominating the play and going up 1-0 on Horgan Smith’s first goal of the year only a few minutes after the opening whistle. Captain Andrea Raso continued to create opportunities for Ryerson, sending a shot in from just over 30 yards away that sailed past the right post. Julia Rao then found herself on a narrow angle with the ball close to the Laurentian goal. The Scarborough, Ont. native skilfully lobbed a shot from the right side over the keeper that bounced off the crossbar and out of play.
The Lady Vees would come up with a couple of corner kicks before the half-time whistle, but were unable to convert leaving them down a goal at the break.
Laurentian had more energy in the early going of the second half, and created some opportunities in hopes of evening the match. Leanne Adams made a fast run down the left side to open up some space between her and the defender. Her shot from the left side of the penalty area was hard but hit the side of the net. Scoring opportunities were limited the rest of the way as the Rams protected the 1-0 lead
.
With the victory, the Rams (2-4-5) grab their second win of the season, and take four important points out of the weekend. The Rams now sit in seventh-place in the OUA East, just two points back of Nipissing (3-4-4) for the final playoff spot in the division.

Nipissing Lakers @ Toronto Varsity Blues
The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team recorded their second straight shut-out win with a 2-0 victory over the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday, October 9 at Varsity Centre.
With the win, the Blues improve to 5-2-4 and sit in third place in the OUA East division.
Toronto opened the scoring in the 28th minute when veteran defender Alicia Lashley of Ottawa jumped on the ball in a scramble in the 6-yard box and tipped the ball passed the line.
U of T’s second goal came in the 43rd minute when Kate Crowley of London, Ont., sent a beautiful through ball to Diana Esterireiro. The Etobicoke, Ont., native made no mistake, sliding the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
The Blues continued to dominate throughout the second half but would no solve Lakers goalkeeper Samantha Behm.
With the win, the Blues improve to 5-2-4 and sit in third place in the OUA East division.

Carleton Ravens @ RMC Paladins
The Carleton University Ravens women’s soccer team claimed its fourth straight victory with a 1-0 win over the RMC Paladins on the road Sunday.
Amanda Ngwafusi (Ottawa) got Carleton off to a quick start with an early strike in the seventh minute. It proved to be all the Ravens would need as they held on for the 1-0 victory.
Keeper Rachel Bedek (St. Thomas, Ont.) had a solid effort in net, recording her fifth shutout of the season.
With the win, the Ravens record improves to 6-3-2 for 20 points and third place in the OUA East standings.

Trent Excalibur @ Ottawa Gee-Gees

The strikers of the Gee-Gees women’s soccer team were on fire today as three players contributed five goals to uOttawa’s drubbing of Trent today, where they won 8-0.
First-year health sciences student Elisabeth Wong, Nepean, Ont., known as “Lili” on the field, had a hat-trick while second-year human kinetics major Krister Draycott, Ottawa, Ont., and second-year criminology and sociology student Christine Hardie, Pictou, N.S., each added two goals apiece.
The Gee-Gee got off to a slower start than usual in the first half with Draycott’s first goal not coming until the 20 minute mark. Despite playing in their own end for the majority of the half, Trent was able to squander many Gee-Gee chances on net.
uOttawa would get the start they needed in the second half however, with Draycott’ssecond goal coming at the 48th minute. From that point on the game was all uOttawa.
Hardie’s first goal would come ten minutes later. Picking up a ball headed by Draycott that sailed over the heads of the Trent defenders, Hardie would finish nicely, beating fourth-year Trent goalie Erin Persi, Sudbury, Ont., who had little help from her defence all game. Draycott and Hardie were the pair to beat for the Gee-Gees, setting each other up nicely on a number of occasions.
Hardie would score her second goal in the 72nd minute off a beautiful feed in the box from Wong.
uOttawa’s other goal came from first-year midfielder Kayla Kazda, Carleton Place, Ont., in the 74th minute before Wong would complete her hat-trick with goals in the 82nd and 88th minute respectively.

Western Mustangs @ Waterloo Warriors
The streaky Warrior women’s soccer team shutout the Western Mustangs Saturday afternoon in Waterloo 1-0. The Warriors showed their inner fight defeating the Mustangs who handed the Warriors a tough 7-0 loss last weekend.
Rookie midfielder Kierstan Colbran (Sarnia, Ont.) found herself in the unusual situation of playing net for the Warriors following a concussion that has sidelined rookie goalie Lesia Bandura (Kitchener, Ont.). Before today, Colbran had never been a keeper throughout her soccer career and picked up the shutout against a tough Mustang team.
First year midfielder Eugenia Acosta (Cambridge, Ont.) netted her second goal of the season in the 33rd minute of the game to lead the Warriors to their third victory of the season. Colbran came up big in her first ever game between the pipes to preserve the lead and win for Waterloo.

York Lions @ Brock Badgers
It was a tremendous afternoon for the York University Lions men’s and women’s soccer teams as they both emerged victorious against the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 9), showing off the strength and resolve of both teams.
In the women’s game, it was a tense affair between both teams with defence playing a central role in denying chances for the squads.
Lions’ rookie forward Sonia Sampona (Toronto) broke the stalemate with a shot that zipped by Luciana Di Paolo (Newmarket, Ont.) in the 88th minute to seal the victory. Goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini (Newmarket, Ont.) earned the shutout for the Lions.
With the victory, the team improved its record to 4-6 and moved into fifth place in the OUA standings with four games to play.
The Lions have 10 points and are two points up on both Brock and Waterloo and are just two points behind the Western Mustangs for fourth place.

Windsor Lancers @ Laurier Golden Hawks
The No. five nationally ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (8-1-2) earned a 0-0 draw with the visiting Windsor Lancers (4-1-4) on Alumni Field.
The home team had a decided advantage in shots, out shooting the visitors 17-4. The offensive leader for the Hawks was Julia Marchese (Oakville, Ont.) who had five shots, followed by national team players Alyssa Lagonia (Kitchener, Ont.) who had three. The Lancers were led by April Leclaire (Windsor, Ont.) who had two shots.
Laurier netminder Katrina Ward (Surrey, B.C.) made three saves while her counterpart Rebecca Singer (Amhersburg, Ont.) turned aside nine.
