W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: Blues blank Excalibur

The Brock Badgers women's soccer team (4-6-3 OUA) overcame the absence of several veteran players and earned their second consecutive 0-0 draw Wednesday when they hosted the Guelph Gryphons.
Badgers keeper Syreeta Rhoden (Niagara Falls, Ont.) stopped eight shots, including six in the second half, to earn her third straight clean sheet. Her counter-part in goal for Guelph, Victoria Parker, also made eight saves on the contest.
The game's best scoring chance game in the 81st minute whenBrock rookie Larissa Bruzzese (Welland, Ont.) made a pass to Kelly Miller (Brantford, Ont.) near the goal, but Parker came up with a game-saving stop off the Miller shot.

Toronto Varsity Blues @ Trent Excalibur
Jessica Fantozzi’s goal in the 17th minute would prove to be the game winner as the Varsity Blues women’s soccer team shut out the Trent Excalibur 3-0 on Wednesday, October 20 in Peterborough, Ont.
With the win, the Blues improve to 7-3-4 and sit in third place in the OUA East division.
Shirley Ho of Calgary added Toronto’s second marker in the 30th minute as the Blues built a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Fourth-year striker Tessa Dimitrakopoulos (Richmond Hill, Ont.) added some insurance in the last minute of the match to round out the 3-0 win.
Blues goalkeeper Kat Vulic of Oakville, Ont., made one save in the shut out victory.

Windsor Lancers @ Western Mustangs
he Western Mustangs women's soccer squad improved to 5-6-2 for 17 points on the season, clinching an OUA West Division quarter-final berth with a 2-1 win over Windsor on Oct. 20 at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
Western now sits in fourth place with 17 points, ahead of Brock and York in the race for a home-playoff game on Oct. 27.
The Mustangs had a strong game from freshman goalkeeper Melanie Oberholzer, while Erin Grand, Chantal Blais, Jenna Schroeder and Counrtney Stocks made things difficult for the Windsor defence with relentless pressure on the ball.
Grand scored with a high curling shot early in the game, using the favourable wind conditions to beat Lancers goalkeeper Danielle St. Germain.
But later in the half, Caroline Lott, sister of former Mustangs forward Catherine, scored on a penalty kick after a controversial hand-ball call. Lott was stopped by freshman Mustangs' goalkeeper Melanie Oberholzer on the original strike from the penalty spot, but she sprinted in and knocked home a rebound past the helpless goalie whose defence did not get a good jump on the rebound.
The teams entered the half-time break tied at 1-1.
Western took the lead late in the second half after Windsor squandered several scoring opportunities.
Early in the second frame, Windsor's senior forward Heather Daichendt was robbed by Oberholzer on a nice counter-attack play from Windsor; the Western netminder came out to slide after the ball, then caught the juicy rebound bounce and secured it to keep the game tied.
Daichendt missed on a low-angle shot, then turned over the ball twice in a four-mintue span beofre missing the net on a point-blank opportunity on an open cage. The snake-bitten Lancers outside midfielder Daichendt made several great runs in the game, but could not convert after the ball bounced off teammate Candance Garrod and then off a Western defender onto her foot with Oberholzer out of position. The ball sailed two feet wide of the net.
Western scored the game-winner minutes later in the 83rd minutes when rookie defender Hayley Slavin beat St. Germain from 35 yards out on a laser-like shot that skimmed along the turf and took a favourable Western bounce late on its passage toward the net past St. Germain.
Oberholzer made four saves for the win in Western's net.

Ottawa Gee-Gees @ Carleton Ravens
The uOttawa Gee-Gees put up a dominant performance over their arch nemesis and cross-town rivals Carleton Wednesday night in OUA women’s soccer action. The garnet and grey were defensively sound and offensively dangerous throughout the match as they remained in control up until Carleton was able to score in the final minute of the match.
Scoring for the Gee-Gees were first-year striker Elisabeth Wong, Nepean, Ont., at the nineteen minute mark, and then it was fifth-year midfielder Élise Desjardins, Cumberland, Ont., who scored what would be the winning goal of the match.
“It feels great! Especially since we tied them our first game, it feels really good to come in and beat them on their home turf,” said a very happy Elisabeth Wong when asked about the uOttawa-Carleton rivalry, and what it meant for her team to get a win at Carleton.
The Gee-Gees had a chance to add to their lead late in the second-half, as Krysta Draycott appeared to be in the clear, but was then hammered by a Carleton defender; there was no call on the play.
With the 2-1 win, the Gee-Gees are tied with Queen’s for first place in the OUA East standings at 36 points apiece. While the Gee-Gees hold the tiebreaker, Queen’s still has a game in hand heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
Head coach Steve Johnson was again pleased with his team’s performance: “It was a dominant performance in the first half when we had the wind. And I like the fact that to start the second half, we came out right away to find a second goal. As we tried to defend, Carleton got a little bit more into the game and territory sung a little bit more into our end and we had to be resilient in order to keep repelling their attacks.”
“At this point in the season I’m quite happy. The fact that we clinched a bye for the first round of the playoffs last week, top two I think is a credit to the team; our defense has been very good.”
