M-RUGBY ROUNDUP: Guelph, Waterloo and McMaster, Brock games end in ties
U of T’s last win came on Sept. 13 versus the Trent Excalibur, when the Blues came away with a 19-0 victory at Back Campus.
Ricardo Gibson (Maho Bay, Virgin Islands) and Vancouver native David Stockton accounted for the Blues tries, while Alex Dwhytie of Etobicoke, Ont., kicked a penalty goal to round out the scoring.
“It was a solid team effort,” said Varsity Blues assistant coach Paul DiCarmine. “We played very composed defence, stuck to our game plan and really executed today.”
Conor Trainor, who will leave for India to represent Canada at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in men's rugby, led the Mustangs with a two-try, one-convert performance for 12 points.
Rory Tomlinson added two tries, while Paukennen had one. Tom Bridger, who was forced to leave the game, added two converts.
The Mustangs built a 24-10 lead at the half and played solid defence to hold on to win.
"It was a good game, it was a really good performance," said head coach Steve Thomas. "We're looking better each week."
Western's defence was tested when Michael Talbot was carded, yet Western did not surrender a point with a player in the sin-bin.
Thomas noted that Andrew Crow also had an excellent two-way game for the Mustangs.
The first half was a seesaw affair with the Gryphons taking the early 7-0 lead and having the Warriors respond quickly thereafter. After exchanging another two tries and successful converts the Warriors and Gryphons went into half locked at 14.
The second half saw the Warriors storm out of the gate showing their offensive power led by fullback Richard Lebel (Waterloo, Ont.). Lebel scored one of his two tries on the afternoon early in the second half to put the Warriors up 19-14. Lebel now has seven tries half way through the 2010 season. Third year hooker Dan Snider (Waterloo, Ont.) added to the Warrior offensive outburst with his second try of the year to give the Warriors a comfortable lead by 10.
The Gryphons found their stride and pushed back down the Warrior side of the field. Following a Gryphon try to put Guelph within five, third year Michael Reid (Niagara Falls, Ont.) tied the game up with a late second half try; his second of the game. A missed convert kept the score at 24 all and the game ended in a draw. Both teams will pick up two points for the draw and an additional point for each scoring four or more tries as per the Sanza rugby standings system.
