M-RUGBY ROUNDUP: Queen's improves record to 4-2
The Blues got out to an early lead with a penalty goal by Etobicoke, Ont., native Alex Dwhytie. Shortly after Ricardo Gibson of Maho Bay, Virgin Islands scored a try to give U of T an 8-0 lead at the half.
Toronto continued to pressure throughout the second half and scored again when prop George Musgrave of London, Ont., made a 20-metre run, going untouched for the try. Dwhytie converted to give Toronto a commanding 15-0 lead.
The game got rough in the last 20 minutes of play and the Golden Hawks were able to spoil the shut out when their scrumhalf picked up the ball and got over the line for a try, which was later converted.
Midway through the first half, Fitzsimmons ran by the Gryphons defense for his third try of the season. Late in the first half, he would pick off a Gryphons pass and walk in all alone from 15 yards out.
The Gaels took an early lead on tries by Mason Curtis (Cobourg, Ont.) and Victoria's Mike Van Der Westhuizen (Moor converted after both) to go up 14-0.
Waterloo brought the game back within reach with a strong stretch in the first half. The Warriors put up a try and convert of their own to come within seven points of the Gaels. Queen's responded though, as their third try and convert of the half left them with 21 points before a Moor penalty goal gave them 24 for the frame.
Waterloo would add another try and convert before halftime, as the teams went into the break with Queen's ahead 24-14.
Queen's shut the door in the second half however as they only allowed three points on a penalty from Waterloo's Richard Lebel. The Gaels would add two more tries and Moor put up two more converts to seal the game for the 38-17 final.
Queen's received tries from Curtis, Van Der Westhuizen, Shane Baddeley (Peterborough, Ont.) , Brandon McGovern (Ottawa), and Henry McQueen (Vancouver) who scored the Gaels final try of the game.
