2006 OUA CHAMPION MUSTANGS TAKE AN EARLY LEAD IN OUA WEST
Haidar Al-Shaibani (London, Ontario) and the Western Mustangs are off to a perfect start with a pair of wins on the opening weekend of the regular season in OUA action Sept. 1-2. On Sept. 1, Paul Arnold converted on an Evan Kadet (Oakville, Ontario) cross in the 25th minute and the Mustangs defence and Al-Shaibani preserved the lead as Western defeated the Waterloo Warriors 1-0.
Then on Sept. 2, the Mustangs faced a gritty Laurier squad, pulling away with another 1-0 victory thanks to the fine play once again of Al-Shaibani. Paul Seymour (Nepean, Ontario) redirected a Kyle Washington (Carp, Ontario) corner kick in the 65th minute into the top corner as Western improved its record to 2-0.
"I'm very happy to have the six points," said Western head coach Rock Basacco. "We played a very diffcult game against Laurier on their turf. It's a great start to our season."
"Haidar's two shutouts this weekend were a highlight," Basacco said. "He's off to a tremendous start."
Carleton 3, Laurentian 2
The Carleton University Ravens Men's Soccer team came back twice from one goal deficits to defeat the Laurentian University Voyageurs, 3-2, in Sudbury, Ontario.
Carleton was led by veteran Striker Kofi Ilboudo (Ottawa, Ontario) who scored the match winning goal at the 82nd minute of play. Justin Campos (Ottawa, Ontario) scored his first career OUA goal at the 28th minute to tied the match at 1 and Craig Deerbank (Ottawa, Ontario) scored his second goal of the 2007 campaign, at the 40th minute, to tie the match at the half, two all.
"The win shows team character as we are away from home in a tough place to play and fell behind twice only to come from behind and earn the three-points," said Head Coach Sandy Mackie.
We didn’t play a very smart game at all, said head coach Carlo Castrechino. Mistakes on our part lead to their goals. It was unlucky, but it’s a long season so we have to rebound and get ready for the next game.
