FIRST PLACE YORK AND WESTERN BATTLE TO 1-1 DRAW
The University of Western Mustangs (7-1-1) opened the scoring against the York University Lions (8-0-2) Saturday in the battle for the number one spot in the West. A western free kick from just outside the 18-yard box in the 15th minute resulted in the Steve Meagher's (Oakville, Ont.) header goal to give the home side an early 1-0 lead.
In the second half of the game, after the Mustangs controlled much of the play in the first, York had the majority of possession and put pressure on the Mustang backs. York player Luca Forno (Toronto, Ont.) scored the equalizing goal 15 minutes into the second half.
Both teams battled in what became a scrappy match as they sought the winning goal that would never come. The game's results put Western's record to 6-1-1 on the season, while York moves to 7-0-2.
Laurier 3, McMaster 0
The Wilfrid Laurier University (5-3-1) played host to McMaster University (1-8-1) as they looked to move to the top half of the standings while the Marauders were in search of their second win on the season.
Laurier started the game strongly and had the majority of possession throughout the game. Ben Clifford (Milton, Ont.) scored from the rebound of Damir Hadziavdic (Kitchener, Ont.) to open the scoring 20 minutes into the game. Alex Doma (Burlington, Ont.) then gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead when he sent a shot flying into the top right corner of the net.
McMaster could not get on the scoreboard as the Hawks dictated the game and controlled much of the play. Hawk Matt Mori (Mississauga, Ont.) sealed the 3-0 victory in the second half with his finish past Marauder keeper (Niagara, Ont.). The game keeps the Marauders at the bottom of the table while it helps to move the Hawks into the top half.
Carleton 4, RMC 0
The Carleton University Ravens (9-0-1) remain undefeated as they defeated the Royal Military College Paladins (0-6-2) on Sunday. Carleton played another solid game as they won 4-0 to improve their OUA East leading record to 9-0-1 for 28-points.
The Ravens have had little trouble scoring this season and they continued the trend this weekend. Virtually after the opening whistle blew, Kofi Ilboudo (Ottawa, Ont.) scored his 8th goal of the season.
As the Ravens continued to apply pressure against RMC, three additional first half goals resulted. Ilboudo added to his tally while Ahmad Berjawi (Ottawa, Ont.) and Craig Deebank (Ottawa, Ont.) all scored within nine minutes of one another. At the 30 minute mark, the home side was down by four.
The Royal Military College substituted goalkeepers for the start of the second which helped them create more chances offensively. A penalty shot was awarded to the Paladins in the 52nd minute but they were unable to get it past the Carleton goalkeeper Arjun Langford (Oakville, Ont.). The win keeps Carleton atop the East standings while RMC is still in search of their first win.
