CARLETON CLINCHES OUA EAST TITLE, TRENT UPSETS QUEEN'S
The Carleton University Ravens (11-0-1) have clinched the OUA East title with their 3-1 victory over the Laurentian University Voyageurs (3-6-1) on Saturday. In their last home game of the regular season, the Ravens put on an impressive display once again to bring their point tally to 34 on the season, 16 clear of the University of Toronto (5-2-3) and Queen's University (5-3-3).
Paul Waiganjo (Ottawa, Ont.) opened the scoring for Carleton in just the third minute of play. Although Voyageur Steve Rachkowski (Lively, Ont.) managed to pull one back for the visiting side in the 28th minute, Carleton continued to push and control the tempo of the game.
Abdullahi Abunafeesa (Ottawa, Ont.) scored at the stroke of halftime and Kofi Ilboudo (Ottawa, Ont.) added one six minutes after the break to make it 3-1. Raven goalkeeper Arjun Lanford's (Oakville, Ont.) had his shutout streak broken at four matches and earned his fifth victory of the season.
Carleton stands firm atop the East standings as Laurentian rests in fifth with ten points.
Trent 2, Queen's 1
In Saturday's match-up between the Queen's University Golden Gaels (5-3-3) and Trent University Excalibur (2-3-4), the underdogs came out on top. Trent managed a come from behind win after conceding a goal in the first half.
Steve Irish (Deep River, Ont.) of the Golden Gaels scored the first and only Queen's goal against the home side in a losing effort in the first half of play on Saturday. Excalibur Matthew Gardiner (Whitby, Ont.) rallied to equalize in the first half sending the teams into the dressing room tied at 1-1.
But it was the home side that put away their chances with a strike past the Queen's goalkeeper in the 52 minute for the decisive goal. Stephen Davis' (Ajax, Ont.) effort was enough to hold the number two Queen's at only one goal and hand them their third defeat of the season. The victory was Trent's second.
