LAURENTIAN WINS TIGHT BATTLE AT RYERSON, WHILE WESTERN EARNS THIRD CONSECUTIVE SHUTOUT
The Laurentian Voyageurs completed their first road trip of the OUA season with a hard fought 1-0 victory over the Ryerson Rams this past weekend. Scoring the lone goal of the match was Voyageur midfielder and reigning Laurentian player of the Week; Trevor Beange (Sudbury, Ontario). Picking up the shutout in net for Laurentian was rookie keeper Andre Gomes (Woodbridge, Ontario).
"I'm proud of our boys" said head coach Carlo Castrechino. "They worked very hard and deserved every bit of this victory. Hopefully this win is something we can build on going into next weekend."
After both teams started slow out of the gate, perhaps gaining a feel for their opposition and pacing themselves for a long battle and the game remained scoreless at the half. The second half would not play out as the first half, as Laurentian sent the Rams crowd home unhappy on a beautifully set up marker by the Voyageur midfielders. The goal by Beange proved to be winner despite the numerous scoring chances had by both teams at the end.
Laurentian's OUA record now stands at 1-2-1 while Ryerson drops to 0-3-1. The Voyageurs return to action at home next weekend when they host the RMC Paladins and Queen's Golden Gaels while the Rams get a break in the action next weekend.
Western 1, McMaster 0
Paul Seymour (Nepean, Ontario) scored in the 67th minute and Haidar Al-Shaibani (London, Ontario) made two clutch saves to give the Western Mustangs their third consecutive OUA regular season shutout victory, a 1-0 decision over McMaster at TD Waterhouse Stadium this past weekend.
Seymour, a fullback, is leading the Mustangs in scoring with his goals coming off set pieces.
In this game, Seymour headed a Scott Cameron (Pickering, Ontario) cross into the top corner and Western preserved the lead.
Next week sees the Mustangs face the Windsor Lancers as well as a re-match of the Marauders while McMaster take on Brock before trying to solve the goal keeping of Al-Shaibani.
