OUA ANNOUNCES WOMEN'S SOCCER ALL-STARS
Defender Kristy de Vries has been named North/South Player of the Year after helping lead the York Lions earn to a berth in the Final Four. de Vries, a nursing student from Niagara on the Lake, ON, has been an imposing figure in the York back end, which allowed just three goals during the regular season. The veteran had not scored all year but came up big when York needed it most, notching her first goal of the season in York’s 3-1 playoff win over the Toronto Varsity Blues.
The Brock Badgers soccer program was glad to have secured the services of newcomer Stefanie De Boer, the North/South Rookie of the Year. The Kinesiology major showed an ability to produce in her first year at Brock, scoring five goals in nine matches.
Brock also boats the North/South Coach of the Year. In his first season at the helm for the Badgers, Charles Ivanov proved that he could develop a winner. The disciplined Badgers won the South Division with a 7-2-1 record and followed that accomplishment up with their first playoff win in the 21-year history of the program, a 1-0 victory over the Laurentian Lady Vees.
East/West Player of the Year Eilish McConville has been an unstoppable force for the powerful Queen’s Golden Gaels this season. The third-year striker is no stranger to hardware, having now secured all-star status in each of her first three seasons, in addition to CIS Rookie of the Year honours in 2003/04. The Ottawa native scored 11 goals on the season, including a stunning five strikes in a 6-0 win over the Windsor Lancers on Sept. 11.
Midfielder Laura Barker was a great addition to Queen’s this season and the Aurora, ON native was recognized for her contributions with the East/West Rookie of the Year award. Barker scored twice on the year but showed her selfless approach to the game in the Golden Gaels 2-1 upset quarter-final win over the defending champion Mustangs as she shadowed forward Kate Crowley and held the Western star goalless.
Ottawa Gee-Gees coach Steve Johnson is the East/West Coach of the Year after guiding his side to the number one ranking in the CIS Top 10 this week. Johnson’s Gee-Gees have not dropped a match all season, winning with a combination of offensive flair and defensive tenacity. Johnson was the CIS Coach of the Year in 1996/97.
