GOLDEN HAWKS AND MUSTANGS ADVANCE FOR DREAM YATES MATCH-UP
3,089 fans turned out in the rain, only to see a fairly slow first quarter. Both teams struggled to move the ball, each choosing to keep the ball on the ground for the most part. Cameron was the catalyst for the Hawks, as he rushed for 86 yards in the first quarter, helping set up two Brian Devlin field goals to put the Hawks up by six.
With McMaster running back Jordon Kozina going nowhere on the ground, quarterback Adam Archibald took to the air. He connected with former quarterback-turned-wide-receiver Jon Behie three times on a 73 yard drive, capped off by a 40-yard reception, putting the Marauders ahead 7-6. Behie finished the game as Archibald’s top target, making six catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
"We fell behind early in the game, and our offense was having trouble moving the ball," said head coach Gary Jeffries. "But credit our guys, they fought back and played well despite the poor conditions."
The Hawks began chipping away at the McMaster lead as two more Devlin field goals put the Hawks up by five and ahead for good. The clincher came at the end of the first half, when Hawk quarterback Ryan Pyear hit Dante Luciani for 37 yards, putting them on the Mac one-yard line. Cameron took it from there, finishing the half with 156 yards, one touchdown and a 19-7 lead.
Laurier continued to roll well into the second half, as Pyear began to hit his groove, hooking up with both Andy Baechler and Joel Wright in the span of five minutes. The scores put the Hawks ahead 33-7, as fans began to filter out of the stadium with the game well in hand.
Despite all of the talk of the 500 yards of total offense put up by the Hawks, the defensive effort was just as important in the victory. McMaster quarterback Adam Archibald was feeling pressure all day. Yannick Carter had two sacks, while Bobby Kootstra had two interceptions, including one in the endzone and Gavin Cond had one. Archibald was forced into completing just 45% of his passes, despite still throwing for 346 yards. The defense also held running back Jordon Kozina off the score sheet, as he rushed for only 38 yards, while Mac as team could only muster a total of 57.
The Hawks will now host the Western Mustangs in this year’s Yates Cup final to be held at University Stadium on November 12th at 1:00 pm. Earlier this season, Laurier defeated Western 33-26 to move to the top of the OUA where they finished their regular season 8-0.

LONDON - The Western Mustangs advanced to the Yates Cup – the OUA football championship – Saturday with an 18-10 win over the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
Third-year running back Randy McAuley and fifth-year receiver Guillaume Leroux each scored touchdowns on the ground for Western with McAuley finishing with 12 rushes for 50 yards.
Leroux’s lone rushing attempt at the 8:15 mark of the third quarter produced all the points the Mustangs would need as the teams were tied 10-10 heading in to the second half.
Superstar fourth-year receiver Andy Fantuz, the all-time receiving yards, receptions and touchdown receptions leader in CIS history, saw limited action and was held to 24 yards on two catches. The Chatham native did haul in a Josh Sacobie pass for his fourth interception against the Gee-Gees this season.
Western quarterback Michael Faulds completed 10 of 22 passes for 169 yards while Sacobie threw for 213 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown to Richard Martin, on 14 for 33 passing.
First-year Mustang kicker Derek Schiavone, the nation’s scoring leader, notched a field goal, two converts and kicked for 367 punting yards on nine attempts. Ottawa’s kicker Ara Tchobanian went for 307 yards on nine punts. He also added a field goal and a convert.
On the defensive side of the ball, third-year defensive back Nick Kordic made five tackles and assisted on two others and added a sack for Western while second-year linebacker Joe Barnes had six tackles and three tackle assists.
