LAURIER STAYS PERFECT WITH ROAD WIN AT WESTERN
The Western Mustangs (5-1) fell for the first time in 2005 with a 32-17 loss to the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks (6-0) – the reigning Yates Cup Champions – in OUA football action Saturday afternoon at TD Waterhouse Stadium. The Mustangs packed in 6,035 fans for the afternoon tilt between the two previously undefeated teams.
Leading 18-10 at the half, the Hawks scored the next 14 points en route to the 15-point win. Fifth-year Golden Hawk pivot Ryan Pyear amassed 223 yards on 15 of 21 passing. His long of the day was a 74-yard pass to Andrew Baechler, who finished with 82 yards receiving. The third-year receiver added a rushing touchdown.
The big story on the ground however was fifth-year Laurier running back Nick Cameron who ran for 176 yards on 27 carries, scoring two touchdowns along the way.
Fourth-year receiver Andy Fantuz scored both Mustang touchdowns while making seven catches for 151 yards. The all-time CIS career receiving yards and touchdown receptions leader now needs just seven receptions in the next two games to complete the hat trick and become the career record holder in that category, as well.
Second-year Western quarterback Mark Howard threw for 249 yards on 16 of 28 passing while third-year running back Randy McAuley rumbled for 60 yards on 12 carries. McAuley now needs 31 yards to become the sixth Mustang in Western history to rush for 2,000 career yards.
Laurier’s fourth-year punter/kicker Brian Devlin set a school record for career scoring with his eight points on the day. The Sarnia native now has 224 surpassing the total of 218 scored between 1975 and 1979 by Jerry Guyles.

Guelph 22 McMaster 20
After one of the most surprising losses in the history of McMaster football on Saturday, a 22-20 loss to the Guelph Gryphons (2-4), the McMaster Marauders (3-3) now find themselves in unfamiliar territory in the OUA standings – in a three-way tie for fourth place, and just one point out of the playoffs.
After missing two short field goals in the second half, Guelph kicker Graham Dorey booted the game-winner with just over two minutes left to play. The Marauders had two drives in the final minutes to try and take the lead, however quarterback Jon Behie threw interceptions in both sequences to kill the Mac threat.
The Gryphons used a dominating running game to control the time of possession battle, holding the ball for 16 minutes longer than the Marauders, and tiring out a depleted Mac defence. Guelph running back Chris McIntyre rushed 26 times for 169 yards as the team rushed for 233 yards in total.
Rookie Gryphon quarterback Justin Dunk performed like a veteran in leading his team to victory. Dunk completed 19 of 32 passes for 284 yards and a score. Dunk and his offensive line avoided the Mac pressure all day, and neutralized any Mac attempts at blitzes.
Behie struggled throughout the second half, as the Guelph defence changed from a blitzing scheme in the first 30 minutes to dropping eight and sometimesnine9 men in coverage in the second half. The Marauders could not adjust and Behie completed only 19 of 42 passes for 247 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.
Jordan Kozina rushed 19 times for 84 yards and a touchdown, yet was a non-factor in the second half as he carried the ball on only a couple occasions in the final two quarters. Andrew Ross led the Mac receivers with five catches for 59 yards and a touchdown.
Linebacker Simon Binder led the team with 12 tackles, however the Mac defence struggled to contain the Guelph running attack, which ran almost exclusively out of the shotgun formation.
Defensive back Andrew Oosterhuis led the Gryphons with 8.5 tackles on the day.
Guelph out gained McMaster 505-365 in total offence.

Ottawa 72 Toronto 0
In front of a quiet holiday weekend crowd, the Ottawa Gee-Gees topped the Varsity Blues 72-0.
U of T opened with a solid first quarter entered the break down 9-0. The first fifteen minutes of play alternated back and forth with not much action from either side, but the Gee-Gees soon discovered the Blues’ weakness. In the absence of many defensive line players, the Varsity Blues found some helpin fourth-year linebacker Nick Snow and rookie defensive back Andrew Sangster. Along with two tackles and three assists, Snow managed to break-up many play attempts of the Gee-Gees. Sangster earned seven tackles and attempted to keep the Blues in the game until the half.
