HAWKS SWEEP PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOURS
Pyear, a fifth-year physical education student from Belleville, Ont. captures the offensive honor following an MVP performance in the national final. The first-team all-Canadian pivot led the No. 3-ranked Hawks to their first Vanier Cup since 1991 and the second in team history completing 20 of 30 passes for 254 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 24-23 win over the No. 2 Saskatchewan Huskies.
Running back David Stevens of Saskatchewan was also up for the award.
Montoya, a third-year student from Burlington, Ont. was named defensive MVP of the Desjardins Vanier Cup after tallying two tackles, including a quarterback sack, and recovering a fumble.
Safety Dylan Barker of Saskatchewan was also nominated.
Devlin, a fifth-year sociology major from Sarnia, Ont. got the nod on special teams for his last-minute heroics, as he booted the winning field goal from 32 yards out with 19 seconds left on the clock.
Punter / kicker Braden Suchan of Saskatchewan was also considered.

After claiming MVP honors at the Uteck Bowl two weeks ago, senior Ryan Pyear of Belleville, Ont. captured the Ted Morris Trophy as MVP of the 2005 Desjardins Vanier Cup after he completed 20 of 30 passes for 254 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. His performance helped the No. 3-ranked Golden Hawks defeat the No. 2 Saskatchewan Huskies 24-23 in the CIS final.
Pyear, 23, threw a touchdown pass in each of the last three quarters of the game as Laurier overcame a 23-15 deficit in the final three minutes of the contest. Named to the first all-Canadian team this season after claiming second-team honors in 2004, Pyear finished the campaign with an astounding 28 passing majors to only five interceptions in 12 overall outings.
The Golden Hawks (12-0), crowned CIS football champions for the first time since 1991 and the second time in program history, are the first team to complete a perfect season since the Saint Mary’s Huskies in 2001.

David Montoya of Burlington, Ont. led a spectacular defensive effort in the Hawks 24-23 win over Saskatchewan in the Desjardins Vanier Cup. The 6-foot-1, 240-pound end received the Bruce Coulter Trophy as the game’s defensive MVP after tallying two tackles, including a quarterback sack, and recovering a fumble.
A second-team OUA all-star in 2005, the 22-year-old Montoya had 6.5 sacks in the regular season, and added three in the playoffs.

Fifth-year senior Brian Devlin of Sarnia, Ont. got to live every kicker’s dream at the 2005 Desjardins Vanier Cup. After missing a 30-yard attempt early in the contest, Devlin secured the national title for the Hawks when he booted a 32-yard field goal with 19 seconds left on the clock.
The 27-year-old Devlin, who also averaged 33.8 yards on eight punts in the championship game, was named to the second all-Canadian team in 2005 after making 17 of 21 field goal attempts in the regular season.
