OUA SWEEPS FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK HONOURS
Stephenson, a second-year human kinetics student from London, Ont. scored five touchdowns on 280 yards rushing in a 63-22 Lancer win over the Toronto Varsity Blues. The 2004 OUA rookie of the year leads the CIS with 667 rushing yards at the halfway mark of the season.
Receiver Ivan Birungi of Acadia, quarterback Matt Connell of McGill, and running back Stephen Hughes of Calgary were also up for the offensive honor.
Beckford, a first-year communications student from Kitchener, Ont. got the nod on defence after tallying 7.5 tackles and returning an interception for a touchdown as the Golden Hawks notched their 14th straight regular-season victory, a key 33-26 win over the McMaster Marauders.
Free safety Elliot Richardson of Acadia, linebacker Nathan Agadzi of Concordia, and defensive lineman Ryan Gottselig of Saskatchewan were also nominated.
Tchobanian, a third-year electrical engineering student from Nepean, Ont. claimed the special teams award after going a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals and keeping a 37.4-yard average on seven punts in a 33-18 Gee-Gee victory over the Queen’s Golden Gaels.
Kicker John Fiset of Mount Allison, and kick returners Pierre-Marc De Champlain of Sherbrooke and Brad Black of Manitoba were also considered.

Sophomore running back Daryl Stephenson had a career night on Saturday against the Toronto Varsity Blues as he reached the end zone on five occasions to help the Lancers even their record at 2-2 with a 63-22 win. The London, Ont. native rushed for 280 yards in the game to take first place in the CIS at the midway point of the season with 667 yards, and set a new school career record with 1,858 yards. The former Windsor mark of 1,743 was established 25 years ago by Craig Mallender.
Stephenson, 21, who carried the ball 30 times versus the Blues, scored twice in the opening quarter and added a major in each of the three other periods to bring his season total to six touchdowns, tied for second in the CIS.
The 6-foot-2, 232-pound back was third in the nation in rushing in his rookie season in 2004 with 1192 yards, finishing behind Hec Crighton Award winner Jesse Lumsden of McMaster (1816), and all-Canadian Andre Durie of York (1367). He was named rookie of the year in the OUA.
The Lancers (2-2) visit the Ottawa Gee-Gees (2-2) on Saturday. Both teams are tied for fourth place in the OUA.

First-year corner back Jahmeeks Beckford didn’t play like a rookie on Saturday as he helped the third-ranked and undefeated Golden Hawks beat archrivals, the McMaster Marauders 33-26, marking their 14th straight regular-season victory.
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound freshman from Kitchener, Ont. recorded a game-high 7.5 tackles on the afternoon but more importantly returned an interception on 32 yards all the way to the end zone early in the second quarter to open a 21-4 lead for the Hawks. The score proved crucial as McMaster came right back with two touchdowns in the next six minutes to make it a three-point affair. Beckford also knocked down two passes in the game.
Laurier (4-0), tied with Western for first place in the OUA, hosts cross-town rival, the Waterloo Warriors (2-2) on Saturday.

Third-year kicker Ara Tchobanian was a major factor on Saturday as the Ottawa Gee-Gees evened their record at 2-2 with a 33-18 win over the Queen’s Golden Gaels. The 20-year-old from Nepean, Ont. was perfect on four field goal attempts, and maintained a 37.4-yard average on seven punts (299 yards) and a 51.8-yard average on four kickoffs (207 yards).
Tchobanian, who is 6-of-9 this season on field goal tries, opened the scoring eight minutes and 16 seconds into the contest with a 32-yarder, and connected again from 17 yards out in the second frame. He sealed the victory in the fourth quarter with 17- and 35-yard kicks.
Ottawa (2-2) hosts the Windsor Lancers (2-2) on Saturday. Both teams are tied for fourth place in the OUA.
