WESTERN RALLIES TO DUMP MCMASTER 55-31 IN UNIVERSITY RUSH OPENER
Western 55 McMaster 31
For 20 minutes on Saturday, the McMaster Marauders (2-1) looked like world beaters. However, football games are 60 minutes long, and the Western Mustangs (3-0) dominated the last 40 minutes in their 55-31 victory over the Marauders at Ivor Wynne Stadium.
With eight minutes left to play in the first half and Mac leading 28-3, Western kicker Derek Schiavone missed a short field goal. However, a roughing-the-kicker penalty was called, leading to an eight-yard touchdown pass from Michael Faulds to Jay Akindolire. Western’s wide receiver Andy Fantuz scored three more touchdowns before the end of the half, propelling the Mustangs to a 31-28 halftime lead. They would never look back, and ended up outscoring Mac 52-3 in the final 40 minutes.
McMaster had 16 penalties for 226 yards, allowing many stalled Western drives to continue, while injuries to quarterback Adam Archibald, CIS leading tackler Eugene Boakye, Jeff Robertshaw, and Andrew Jones decimated Mac's depth.
Archibald played the finest football of his career in the first quarter, moving the ball at will against the Western defence. However, after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit, he struggled for a couple series, before being removed from the game. He completed 13 of 22 passes for 257 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Vaughan Swart and B.J. Malott each had three catches for 80 yards, with Malott notching a touchdown. Other scores went to Rob Serviss and Jeff Robertshaw (fumble recovery). Jordan Kozina rushed 16 times for 68 yards.
Tristan Clovis led the Marauders with 10.5 tackles on the day.
Michael Faulds completed 26 of 35 passes for 364 yards and six touchdowns, with one interception. Fantuz left no doubt that he is the top receiver in the country, catching six passes for 51 yards, with four touchdowns.
Western’s Randy McAuley rushed 15 times for 93 yards, while D.J. Bennett rushed 11 times for 70 yards. Matt Carapella stood out for the Western defence with five tackles and an interception.

York 40 Toronto 33
In front of an energetic capacity crowd of 1,167 at Varsity Stadium, the York Lions needed overtime to defeat the Toronto Varsity Blues 40-33 in the 36th annual Red and Blue Bowl. On the line were bragging rights in the GTA and the Argo Cup, donated by the Toronto Argonaut Football Club.
Toronto won the coin toss in overtime and chose to go on the defense first. York found the end zone with an 18-yard pass to wide receiver Ricardo Hudson, his second touchdown of the day. Toronto made a valiant effort to respond but fell one yard short with no time remaining on the clock.
York was first on the board with a touchdown by Hudson. U of T quickly responded with one of their own four minutes later on a rush by Tony Bahsous. With one minute remaining in the half, running back Mark Gaudett bulled his way into the end zone to put Toronto ahead 14-9 at the break.
At the top of the third quarter, York rebounded with a five-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bart Zemanek to Brian Wheatle. U of T pressured for the next 10 minutes and the persistence paid off with second-year receiver Cory Kennedy finding the end zone. Instead of going to Joe Valtellini for the extra point, U of T opted for the two-point conversion and narrowly missed the pass.
In a series of errors, Toronto allowed York to earn two touchdowns and a field goal with 0:55 seconds remaining. Quarterbacks on both sides played great, but the Blues David Hamilton earned player of the game honours for the six-yard pass to Tony Mammoliti to send the game into overtime. Hamilton was 19-of-29 attempts for 264 yards

Windsor 27 Queen’s 24
Led by Daryl Stephenson's 245 yards rushing, the Windsor Lancers (1-2) picked up their first victory of the season as they knocked off the Queen's Golden Gaels 27-24. The game was played in front of 1,132 people in only the Lancers' second ever game in the new University of Windsor Stadium.
Stephenson carried the ball 31 times for 245 yards and a touchdown. Lancer quarterback Jon Dent completed 14 of 25 passes for 113 yards. The Lancers also got a strong performance on defense from DB Sasha Glavic who picked off two Queen's passes for a pair of interceptions on the day.
The first half opened with the Golden Gaels marching the length of the field in only three plays, finishing with a Ryan Elger field goal to give Queen's a 3-0 lead. The Lancers answered with a field goal of their own and then were given a big boost on an ensuing drive as Stephenson broke through three tackles and carried the ball 47 yards for a touchdown. The two teams then traded scores as the Lancers entered half time with a 14-10 lead.
In the second half, the Lancers got a one-yard rushing touchdown from Luis Mendez and a pair of Kevin Reider field goals. Queen's got a late touchdown pass from back-up quarterback Ali Clarkson but it was too little too late for the Gaels.
The Lancers will try to even their record this coming Saturday as they host the University of Toronto Varsity Blues as part of the University of Windsor's Homecoming Weekend. The football game will be the first night game ever played in the new stadium. Game time is set for 7:00pm.

Waterloo 27 Guelph 24 OT
The Waterloo Warriors (2-1) matched their 2004 win total in only their third game of the season with a 27-24 overtime victory over the hometown Guelph Gryphons (0-3) at Alumni Stadium on Saturday.
A late fumble recovery by Guelph shortly after missing a field goal led to a two-yard touchdown run from Drew Davenport, moving them within two points of Waterloo with 4:08 to go in the fourth quarter. Guelph’s two-point conversion attempt was successful, setting the stage for overtime.
The home team won first possession in overtime, and brought the ball within field goal range for kicker Peter DeGouw, who had made only one of four field goal attempts before connecting, to put Guelph ahead 24-21. Waterloo’s final drive could not be stopped by Guelph’s defense, and the visitors walked away with the victory after Travis Gellatly’s second TD sealed the game.
Waterloo dominated immediately after halftime, jumping ahead 21-13 on touchdowns by Gellatly and Darren Shock, both of whom scored a pair of touchdowns in the game. Warriors quarterback John Morbey was a steadying influence all day, completing 20 of 35 passing attempts for 272 yards, including a 78-yard bomb to Shock.
Defensively, the Warriors were led by LB Ben Haist’s six tackles. Shane Everest’s added four tackles, two assists and a fumble recovery.
Gryphons’ fourth-year quarterback Matt Bryans went 12-for-34 with no interceptions, but once again Guelph was forced to rely on their ground game to move the ball. With featured running-back Chris McIntyre out with an injury, rookie Brad Crawford exploded for 125 of Guelph’s 145 total rushing yards on 26 carries, keying their offence along with Davenport’s two touchdowns.
DB Sean Riley played a stellar game for Guelph with seven tackles and one interception before being forced to leave with an injury in overtime, shortly before Waterloo scored to ice the game.

Laurier 21 Ottawa 14
The Wilfird Laurier Golden Hawks over came a seven-point third-quarter deficit to dash the hopes of the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees downing the Garnet and Grey 21-14 in a rain-soaked game at Frank Clair Stadium. More than 2,000 fans braved the elements to take in the first annual Gee-Gees homecoming football game.
The win was the 12th consecutive for the nation’s third-ranked team, keeping the Hawks in a first-place tie with the Western Mustangs, who are the only other team in the OUA to start the season 3-0.
Laurier opened the scoring 4:23 into the game, marching 53-yards on a six play drive. Nick Cameron hauled in Ryan Pyear’s 11-yard toss to give the Hawks the early advantage. But the Gee-Gees responded just two minutes, converting on a Laurier fumble. Shonari Knibbs ran 26-yards to put Ottawa in scoring position, where potential Hec Creighton nominee Josh Sacobie connected with Adam Nicholson for a six-yard major to even the score.
The second period was highlighted by the defensive tag-team of Joe Barnes and Daniel Hall who singlehandedly thwarted a Golden Hawks scoring change, stipping Cameron of the ball after a 35-yard catch-and-run play. Cameron fumbled the ball at the four-yard after being tackled by a diving Barnes that allowed Hall to pounce on the free ball. The Gee-Gees looked poised to take the lead after Sacobie hooked up with David Crane on a 45-yard bomb, but Nicholson fumbled on the next play to stop the drive. Ottawa would eventually get back into scoring possession, but Ara Tchobanian’s 42-yard field goal attempt with seconds remaining would go wide right to keep the score even at 7-7 at the break.
Three minutes into the third quarter, Crane would break the tie, catching an eight-yard touchdown pass from Sacobie. Crane helped set up the score making a spectacular 36-yard catch. Less than four minutes later, the Hawks would move to within a single point after a Joel Wright touchdown. On the ensuing conversion attempt, it was Wright who hooked up with team mate Bryon Hickey in the end zone for a two-point convert to give the Hawks at 15-14 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Brian Devlin split the uprights on a pair of field goals (31 and 32 yards respectively) to seal the Hawks victory.
Laurier out gained the Garnet and Grey 344-320. 218 of Ottawa’s yards came via the pass, while 120 came on the ground. The Hawks threw for 204 yards, and ran for another 120.
Josh Sacobie was 15 of 32 for 218 yards, a pair of touchdowns and one interception. For the third consecutive game, David Crane was the top Ottawa receiver hauling in 111-yards on five receptions.
For Laurier, Pyear went 16 of 26 for 199-yards and two touchdown strikes. Fifth year receiver Nick Cameron caught 5 passes for 31 yards, but gained another 95 on the ground on 20-attempts. Wright caught four passes for 75-yards.
