OUA ANNOUNCES FOOTBALL ALL-STARS
The defending Yates Cup champion Laurier Golden Hawks completed their second consecutive perfect regular season (9-0 overall including playoffs) and are well represented in the first and second all-stars teams. In total, third-ranked Laurier has 14 all-star selections.
Western Mustangs wide receiver Andy Fantuz was voted to the first team for the fourth consecutive year, a season in which the Chatham, ON broke the all-time Canadian Interuniversity Sport receptions record and led the nation with 12 receiving touchdowns. Fantuz now holds the CIS records for most catches (189), most yards (4,123) and most touchdowns (41) by a receiver.
Fifth-year Laurier defensive halfback Ian Logan, Windsor Lancers inside receiver Arjei Franklin and McMaster Marauders linebacker Jason Pottinger, the 2004 President's Trophy winner, each made their third all-star teams. After two straight seasons of being voted to the second team, Laurier guard Mitch Zappitelli earned a well-deserved appearance on the first team in 2005. McMaster inside receiver Vaughan Swart made the first team for the second time in his career. Laurier quarterback Ryan Pyear made his second straight first team, as did York Lions defensive end Ricky Foley.
Some of the first-time all-stars include Guelph Gryphons wide receiver Jeff Keegan, the CIS receiving yardage leader with 936, Jordan Kozina, a rookie running back on the Marauders who passed the 1,000-yard rushing mark in his first season and Laurier running back Nick Cameron. Cameron joins last year's Norm Marshall Trophy winner Daryl Stephenson on the first team after enjoying a career year with 1,025 rushing yards, fifth in the country, and eight touchdowns. Second-year Ottawa Gee-Gees quarterback Joshua Sacobie is also a first-time all-star after throwing for 2,094 yards and 18 touchdowns passes.
A full list of all-stars appears below. The 2005 major award winners will be announced at a press conference Thursday, November 10, at the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in Hamilton, ON.
