MCMASTER FINISHES STRONG WITH WIN OVER GOLDEN GAELS

The marquee match-up in OUA rugby this week featured the undefeated McMaster Marauders and the East Division leading Queen’s Golden Gaels. McMaster stayed perfect with the playoffs approaching, beating the Gaels 29-10. OUA and CIS scoring leader Spencer Fullerton had 14 points for McMaster, contributing a try, three conversions and a penalty goal. Shawn Windsor, Joel Harwood and Robert Ashwood also added tries for McMaster.

The defending champion Western Mustangs enter the playoffs fresh from a 59-3 win over the Carleton Ravens. Sam Jenkins led the way with 19 points on a try and seven conversions. Both Western and McMaster receive a bye in the first week of the playoffs.

The Brock Badgers edged the Waterloo Warriors 18-15 Saturday. Matt Wyles had a try and a conversion, while Jarod Selby had two penalty goals for the Badgers. The Laurier Golden Hawks scored 10 tries en route to a 60-0 shut-out of the Trent Excalibur. Adam Markew led the way with three of the tries for 15 points. Steve Piatek, second in the nation in scoring behind McMaster’s Fullerton, had a try, four conversions and a penalty goal for the Windsor Lancers as they defeated RMC 36-10. After a difficult season, the Guelph Gryphons finished strong with a 58-0 victory over the winless Toronto Varsity Blues. Matteo Schwartzentruber recorded three tries for the Gryphons.

Carleton will play Queen’s in the opening round, while Windsor will travel to Brock. The lowest remaining seed to win will take on McMaster the following week, with the other team facing Western
