MARAUDERS AND MUSTANGS TO BATTLE IN CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH
The McMaster Marauders defeated the Brock Badgers 54-7 in the OUA semi-finals on Sunday to advance to their fourth consecutive OUA Championship game. Senior, Spencer Fullerton (Carp, ON) led the Marauder scoring with 14 points connecting on seven conversions.
The Marauders were stunned early in the contest by Brock's full back Jared Selby, who succeeded in threading his way through the McMaster defence to score under the posts at the 10-minute mark. The early score was a wake-up call for the Marauders who got down to work. At 16 minutes, scrum half Rob Ashwood (Stroud, ON) spotted a hole to the right of a ruck and capitalized with a darting run to the goal line. Five minutes later Nolan Ott (Uxbridge, ON) was able to finish off some pretty ball-handling to score out wide. Shortly thereafter, Allen took a pass close to the line and scored after juggling the ball on the way over. Joel Waldock (Tottenham, ON) was able to score on a set play from five yards out to close out the half.
In the second half it was the back rows chance to capitalize on the space created by the McMaster forwards. The Marauder back row used their speed and passing outside to control the ball and find their way over the goal line. James Wood (Oakville, ON) scored a try five minutes into the second half, followed by Matt Mathieson (Mississauga, ON), who notched two for the Marauders. Shawn Windsor (Stoney Creek, ON), a strong candidate for the OUA Rookie-of-the-Year Honours, finished the scoring with his ninth try in nine games.
The Marauders, who are seeking their third OUA Title in four years, will take on the defending OUA Champions from the University of Western Ontario. The title game will take place on Saturday, November 5th at Fletcher's Field in Newmarket. Game time is scheduled for 2:15 pm.
