OUA ANNOUNCES MEN'S RUGBY ALL-STARS
In the East, St. Catharines native Ramsey Ida has been named the division’s Most Valuable Player. An incredibly unique athlete, Ida played football for the Queen’s Golden Gaels before switching over to rugby. The prop is a ferocious competitor on the pitch and a brilliant student off of it, as he is doing his graduate work in the field of chemistry.
Mark MacSween made a noticeable impact in his first year with the Brock Badgers, earning East Rookie of the Year honours. The first-year Recreation and Leisure student from Scarborough, ON contributed four tries in six matches playing as an 8 man. The four tries tied him for the team lead in that department.
The East Trillium Award for the best all around player goes to another Badger, fifth-year veteran Martin Clancy. The flanker showed he could find the try-line as he tied MacSween for the team lead with four but the Business Administration major continued to make significant contributions all over the pitch, helping lead Brock to a second-place finish in the East behind the Golden Gaels.
In a West division that boasts two of the class sides in the country in Western and McMaster, the Windsor Lancers were proud to have the best player. Outside centre Steve Piatek was named the Most Valuable Player after a sensational season. The third-year Brantford native and 2003 Rookie of the Year (tier two) was one of the most prolific scoring threats in the game, tallying five tries and 12 conversions for 70 points (third in the CIS) in five matches.
McMaster’s lineup is loaded with veteran quality yet first-year Stoney Creek, ON native Shawn Windsor still stood out, his 2005 performance garnering him the East Rookie of the Year award. Windsor tied teammate and National team member Aaron Carpenter with a CIS-best eight tries, while also adding 12 conversions.
Western flanker Dan Polakoff is the recipient of the West’s Trillium Award. Polakoff, a fourth-year native of Winnipeg, MAN, has proven his consistency since joining the Western program in 2001. Polakoff has been named to the all-star team three consecutive seasons.
