BROCK HOLDS OFF GUELPH AND YORK
The No. 10 McMaster Marauders trail the Badgers by a single point in the division after securing four of six available points in their two matches this weekend, 0-0 draw with York Saturday and a 1-0 win over Guelph Sunday. Mac's Amy Holt and York's Aurelia Gumiela each recorded the shut-outs in the goalless draw, while Laura Shoots had the only goal against Guelph. Holt, a third-year Hamilton, Ont. native, was also in net for the Guelph win and now has four shut-outs in the early going of 2006.
In the East, the No. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees were idle, which allowed the Queen's Golden Gaels and Carleton Ravens to take over first and second place respectively in the division. The Gaels opened up the week with a convincing 4-0 win over the Nipissing Lakers and then drew 0-0 with the tough Laurentian Lady Vees. Carleton earned six points from two wins, beginning with a 2-1 win over Trent Saturday thanks to a pair of goals from Amber Prosia. Prosia had another in the 4-0 blanking of Trent Sunday. Veteran Diana Burmester opened the scoring the third minute of the match, while Sarah Marcantonio added a couple of late strikes in the last seven minutes of regulation time. The Ravens trail Queen's by a point and sit one ahead of both Ottawa and Toronto. The Varsity Blues played just one match on the week, defeating the Ryerson Rams 1-0 Sunday. Erica Basso scored the lone goal of the match, while Alexis Vaughan had the clean sheet in the Blues net.
The Lady Vees had a busy week with three matches in total, beginning with a 1-1 draw with Nipissing Wednesday. Nicole O'Brien put the Lakers in the lead with a strike in the 17th minute but second-year midfielder Erica Duczeminski rescued the match for Laurentian with a late goal to earn the point. The Lady Vees didn't need any late heroics the next time out as Caitlin Kelly scored twice and Jenna Roach added another in a 3-0 win over RMC Saturday.
In other OUA action, Ryerson defeated Trent 2-0 Wednesday. The Windsor Lancers drew 0-0 with the Waterloo Warriors Saturday and then dropped a 2-0 decision to the Laurier Golden Hawks Sunday. Laurier had lost 3-0 the previous day to the Western Mustangs, who had a pair of goals from Julie Beynon and another strike from Kate Crowley. Nipissing beat RMC 4-0 Saturday, while the Warriors got past the Mustangs 1-0 Sunday.
