OUA ANNOUNCES WOMENS SOCCER ALL STARS AND MAJOR AWARD WINNERS
Three members of both the OUA champion Ottawa Gee-Gees and silver medallist Queen's Golden Gaels were selected to the conference all-star first team. Also receiving three first-team picks were McMaster and York while 11 different schools in total had student-athletes chosen to the top team.
Fourth-year forward Jenna Byrne (Brampton) captured MVP honours in the West Division. The Brampton, Ontario native led a powerful offence that scored more goals (18) in the West than any other team. Bryne also impressed many during the postseason when she potted the game-winning goal in the Mustangs' 1-0 win over Brock in the quarter-finals and she also scored both goals in the 2-1 overtime victory against Wilfrid Laurier in the first round.
The East Division MVP was awarded to fourth-year striker Eilish McConville (Ottawa) of Queen's. The Applied Science major had one of the most incredible seasons in recent OUA soccer history, recording 19 goals in 14 regular season games and potted a hat trick for good measure in the Gaels 3-0 semifinal win over Western Ontario. McConville totalled 10 more goals than her closest competitor in the OUA and also led all scorers in the CIS. Queen's finished the regular season in first place in the East Division (12-1-3) and captured the silver medal after a 1-0 loss to Ottawa in this weekend's final.
The T. Litzen Sports Ltd. OUA Rookies of the Year include forward Tessa Dimitrakopoulos of Ryerson and Samantha Batten of McMaster. Coach of the Year honours goes to Barry MacLean of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the West and Beth McCharles of the University of Toronto in the East Division.
A prestigious recognition within the OUA is the Student-Athlete Community Service Award. The 2006 recipients are rookie McMaster sweeper Carly Moore (Sarnia, Ontario) and fourth-year Ottawa defender Arden Jobling (Oakville, Ontario).
Each OUA first team all-star will receive a gift courtesy of Wilson Sports Equipment of Canada in recognition of their accomplishment.
