IAN MCCLURG NAMED HEAD COACH OF GRYPHONS WOMEN'S SOCCER PROGRAM
“We are very fortunate to have Ian join our coaching staff, “commented Athletic Director Tom Kendall. “He is a very qualified and successful coach who will ensure that our women’s soccer players reach their potential as student athletes. Ian will also be a useful resource and mentor to younger coaches and to athletes who wish to become coaches. This is a very positive step for the Gryphons women’s soccer program”
McClurg comes to Guelph after spending the last seven years as President and Director of Coaching at 1v1 Soccer, a company he founded because of a desire to provide young Canadian players with the same playing experiences as leading soccer nations.
The Northern Ireland native, who immigrated to Canada in 1981, has worked with six members of the current Canadian female national team program and over 100 female athletes who have played at Canadian or American collegiate institutions. He is the current coach of the U-18 girls SAAC team, while the previous year he was the head coach of the Toronto Lynx U-17 girls program that played in the Super-Y league.
At the provincial level, McClurg served as an Ontario Soccer Association team coach within the female program where he won two gold medals and a bronze medal during his three-year tenure from 1998-2000.
“I am very excited to join the Gryphons women’s soccer program,” said McClurg. “It has been a personal goal of mine to work with student athletes at the highest level. My goal is to provide Canadian female players with the opportunity to receive a good education at a highly regarded university in Canada, as well as develop their soccer abilities. I was impressed by the vision and passion shown by the Gryphons and look forward to working with the players.”
The current member of the English Football Association and National Soccer Association of America has successfully completed his UEFA, US and Canadian B-level coaching certifications. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics at McMaster University and went on to receive his Masters of Business Administration from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.
