GAELS FALL IN CIS FINAL, WHILE GEE-GEES EARN BRONZE
The final started out fast and furious. Queen's was the first to be able to take advantage of wet field conditions at Centennial Stadium as CIS player of the Year, Eilish McConville, won a head ball in the midfield, the ball dropped for striker Renee MacLellan who took advantage of a slip by a UBC midfielder and slotted the ball behind UBC keeper Jaclyn Dennett for the early 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute of the game.
Neither team was willing to sit back and be patient as each worked hard to created several offensive opportunities. In the 23rd minute, McConville took a terrific strike that hit the crossbar. In the 28th minute, Thunderbird's forward Stephanie Thibert had a wonderful individual effort, outpacing the Queen's defence and did all the work to put the ball behind goalie Katie McKenna to even the score at one apiece. UBC had six corner kicks throughout the half and one of them finally paid off at the 42nd minute as Amy Bobb got on the end of a rebound from keeper McKenna and scored the second and winning goal of the game for UBC. Bobb was also a goal scorer in their semi-final game over the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
The second half began with sustained pressure from UBC. Thunerbird's Thibert continued to cause all kind of havoc for the Queen's defenders as her work rate seemed to get better as the game wore on. In the 66th minute, UBC's Jessica Briker put over a perfectly placed cross from the right hand side that Caitlin Davie was able to control and hit it with a left foot strike that eluded McKenna. UBC was not content with the lead as they continued to pressure until the final whistle winning numerous corner kicks.
"This shows that we can win in more than one way," said UBC Head Coach Dick Mosher. "Today we came from behind. It seemed we needed that little bit of adversity to wake us up. But we really won the way that is characteristic for our team"¦from defending from front to back."
"We gave away way too many corner kicks and set plays," added Queen's Head Coach Dave McDowell. "We did a good job in the first half but in the second half, give them credit, they were the better team."
The player of the game for UBC was midfielder Davie while the MVP for Queen's was goal scorer McLellan.
UBC wins their 5th CIS Championship gold medal in nine appearances. The last time they won was back to back Championship seasons in 2002 and 2003.

OTTAWA CAPTURES BRONZE IN 2-0 WIN OVER YORK
VICTORIA (CIS) - The Ottawa Gee-Gees earned their 7th medal in eight appearances at the CIS Women's Soccer Championships with a 2-0 win over the York University Lions.
Championship web site: www.universitysport.ca/e/championships/w_soccer/2006
The game was switched to the UVic Turf because of adverse field conditions and it was the Gee-Gee's who were able to control the wet, slick field turf in the early goings even though they had not played on the surface throughout the tournament. Though Ottawa dominated the possession game in the first half, neither team was able to mount any kind of quality scoring chances. York was consistently pressured by Ottawa keeping the Lions hemmed in their end of the field.
York, though, was very quick defensively, coming up to each and every challenge Ottawa threw their way. Ottawa changed their tactic from their earlier game with UVic changing from the patient, waiting team to the attacking team against York. Though Ottawa may have had the edge in possession in the first half, quality scoring chances were far and few between. There was a lot of exchange of possession in the midfield as both teams relied on the strength of their defensive play.
The second half began as a carbon copy of the first as both teams continued with their tight marking not allowing the game to open up. Ottawa's Courtney Luscombe had several menacing runs down the right side of the field and some strong possession play.
In the 69th minute of play, York substitute Catherine Ciarallo seemed to infuse a bit of energy into the game as she started to make some runs through Ottawa's defence.
Shortly after that, Wendy Donaldson set herself up in the 75th minute and took an unassisted shot from just outside the 18 yard box. Goalie Aurelea Gumilia seemed to have a line on the shot but it scooted under her arms. The goal energized Ottawa as they began to come down the field in wave after wave of attack. Luscombe, again, worked her magic with Maude Filion-Collin and headed in a perfectly placed cross to make it a 2-0 game in the 77th minute. Ottawa continued to pressure well into the waning minutes of the game as Katie Lugg and Luscombe kept up the pressure.
"I thought we played really well," stated Ottawa Head Coach Steve Johnson. "We were able to keep possession on play and put the ball on players' feet. I was happy with our play on the wings, we were able to find the flanks well."
"I thought we were every bit as good as Ottawa today," said York Head Coach Paul James. "We were caught in a tactical error. I put in a forward to help us on offence and we got caught right away. We didn't deserve to lose this game the way we did."
