OUA BY THE NUMBERS
HAMILTON, Ont. – A weekly look at the facts and figures from around Ontario University Athletics.
61 – The number of saves recorded by Waterloo women’s hockey goalie Rebecca Bouwhuis in two games over the weekend. The Orillia, Ont. native made 25 saves against then-No. 10 Western but came up on the wrong side of a 3-2 score. She followed that up with a 36-save performance in a 2-1 win over the Windsor Lancers, who are the highest scoring team in the OUA.
2 – The number of gold medals won by Toronto Varsity Blues swimmer Zack Chetrat (Oakville, Ont.) to help the host team win the men’s and overall title at the 2012 University Cup meet. Chetrat took the gold in the 100-metre butterfly in meet record time, before taking the top spot in the 400-metre freestyle event. The fourth-year student qualified for the CIS championships in both events, and was also named Pioneer Energy OUA male athlete of the week.
20 – The number of goals scored during the OUA women’s water polo champion tournament by Carleton’s Sarah McIlveen (Scarbrough, Ont.) to lift the Ravens to the gold medal. The fourth-year psychology student was a major factor in helping Carleton finish pool play with a 4-0 record, before recording a hat trick and adding a shootout score in a 6-5 win over Toronto in the gold medal match. The impressive performance earned McIlveen Pioneer Energy OUA female athlete of the week honours.
49 – The amount of points collected by Laurier men’s basketball player Max Allin (Chatham, Ont.) in helping the Golden Hawks to a 1-1 record over the weekend. The fourth-year guard scored 29 points in a 96-94 win over York, and followed that up with 20 points in a loss to Laurentian. Allin is currently averaging 24.0 points per game, which is tops in the OUA and third in the CIS.
19 – The number of digs by York women’s volleyball player Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto) in a match against Ottawa over the weekend. Her dig total was four more than any other player in the game. The third-year left side also chipped in 14.5 points offensively. The Lions downed the Gee-Gees 3-2 in the battle of unbeaten teams.
12 – The number of former OUA players who hoisted the 100th Grey Cup as members of the Toronto Argonauts. York, McMaster, Western and Waterloo were all represent on the Argos roster during Sunday’s historic game. Former York Lions defensive end Ricky Foley collected four tackles, one fumble recovery and one sack to be named Most Outstanding Canadian in the game, while former York running back Andre Durie added a receiving touchdown in the Toronto win.
3.86 – Goals per game scored by the Windsor Lancers men’s hockey team. The Lancers have scored 54 goals through their first 14 games, which trails only Western’s 4.14 for top spot in the OUA. The Lancers are led by Evan Stibbard (Windsor, Ont.) and Spencer Pommells (Grand Prarie, Alta.) who have 10 and nine goals respectively. The high-powered Windsor offence will be featured in this week’s OUA Marquee Matchup as they host the Guelph Gryphons for two games; Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, both at 7:30 p.m.
