LANCERS NOTCH FIRST TWO WINS OF THE SEASON
The Rams look good in their opening match Friday, a 3-0 win over the Queen’s Golden Gaels. It wasn’t easy for the first-place Rams, as all three games were won by the score of 25-23. Fourth-year standout Ryan Vandenburg led Ryerson with 16 kills and 21 points in the match. The Rams had a tougher road to victory in their second match of the week, a 3-2 win over the RMC Paladins. Ryerson dropped the first two games but managed to win three in a row, including a decisive 15-7 victory in the fifth. Vandenburg led the way again with a match-high 22 kills, while Lukas Porosa and Greg Marszalek had 18 and 12 digs respectively.
The Western Mustangs won their only match of the week. Western started strong with a 3-1 win over the Golden Hawks (28-26, 25-16, 22-25, 25-18) as Jean-Paul Wikerd, Peter Wigger and Jamieson Bondarenko all had double-digit kills. The Toronto Varsity Blues went 1-1, kicking off their season with a 3-0 win over the Paladins. The Blues won the games 25-19, 25-15 and 25-22, with Bowie Cheung leading the team defensively after producing a match-best 14 digs. Toronto then dropped their second match of the week Saturday to Queen’s, 3-1. Daniel McCrae led the Golden Gaels to their second victory of the season with 21 kills, while Steve Willis and Andrew Bridgeman had 11 and 10 digs in fending off the Varsity Blues attack. Brendan Peel had 20 kills for Toronto.
In other action, the Guelph Gryphons lost both of their matches to the York Lions and McMaster Marauders 3-0.
