MUSTANGS HANG AROUND THE TOP WITH A PAIR OF WINS
The Western Mustangs showed that they will be a force in the OUA playoffs this past weekend as they pulled out a gritty 3-2 victory over the powerful Queen's Golden Gaels Sunday. Chris Mokriy had 11 kills and 13 points for the Mustangs, while setter Andrew Hinchey tallied 33 assists. Hinchey is fifth in the OUA with 597 assists. Luke Litchy was unstoppable for the Gaels, pounding out a match-high 22 kills to go along with 13 digs. Western trailed two sets to one but won the fourth 25-22 before taking the fifth by a score of 15-12. The Mustangs also defeated the RMC Paladins 3-1 Thursday and are currently 14-5 in league play, while Queen's is 14-4. The Gaels began the weekend with a thorough 3-0 win over the Windsor Lancers. Andrew Bridgeman, a fourth-year outside hitter, had nine kills to lead all players. CIS kills leader Dave Quinn paced the Lancers with eight. Windsor hung tough in the first set losing 25-22 but Queen's ran away with the match after that, recording wins of 25-13 and 25-12 in the second and third sets.
The York Lions kept up their recent strong play with a big 3-1 win over the McMaster Marauders Thursday at home. Sholan Trivedi was one of five York players with double digit kills, leading the team with 16. Rob Dyba tallied 12 digs, while York's Paul Podstawka had 47 assists on the match. Daniel Smedley led the Marauders with 19 kills and 24 points. The Lions weren't as lucky against the Toronto Varsity Blues Sunday, as Toronto fought to a 3-0 victory, winning the sets by scores of 25-20, 25-22 and 25-23. Brendan Peel had 16 kills for the Blues, while James MacKay led all players with 38 assists. Trivedi had another 19 kills and 20 points for York, which dropped to 12-6 after the loss.
The Laurier Golden Hawks received an incredible 26 kills from standout second-year outside hitter Jean-Paul Wilkerd as they needed five sets to beat the Windsor Lancers 3-2 Wednesday. Surprisingly, Wilkerd's tally wasn't even the best of the day. The Hawks took the third set 30-28 but dropped the fourth as Windsor, behind Quinn's 30 kills, evened the match. Laurier won 15-13 in the fifth to close it out. Quinn finished off an impressive week with 24 more kills and 25 points in a 3-1 win over the RMC Paladins Sunday. Rafal Tracynski led the Lancers with 16 digs.
Jeff Laycock, a third-year middle from Ottawa, ON, had 15 points to lead the Guelph Gryphons to a 3-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors Saturday. Matt Peters had nine kills for Guelph, while Kostya Kovalenko led the Warriors with 11. The Gryphs are 7-12 through 19 matches. Waterloo has yet to win this season.
