RAMS SURVIVE GAELS IN FIVE-SET MARATHON
The Western Mustangs enjoyed a strong week as they beat the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-1 Wednesday and then upended the Guelph Gryphons by the same score Sunday. Eric Simon, a first-year right side player from London, paced the Mustangs with 13 kills against Laurier. Alex Jerome added 12 kills and 12 digs, while setter Andrew Hinchey (pictured) had 46 assists. Jean-Paul Wilkerd led the Hawks with 20 points and 19 kills, while Cam Smellie added 11 digs. Jerome had another 13 kills and 16 digs versus the Gryphons. He has 107 digs on the season, 11th in the league. Guelph evened the match at a set each with a 26-24 win in the second but Western took the third 25-23 and then steamrolled the Gryphons in the fourth, winning 25-13. Andrew Bertram had 11 kills for Guelph.
The McMaster Marauders improved to 12-4 as they dominated the winless Waterloo Warriors 3-0 Friday in Hamilton. Daniel Smedley had 15 kills and 20 points for the 12-4 marauders, while Sean Panchal added 16 assists. Waterloo also lost 3-0 to the Windsor Lancers Wednesday and now sit at 0-17 in the OUA basement. CIS kills leader Dave Quinn had a match-high 18 against the Warriors. Eduardo Parungao had 37 assists.
The York Lions remain one of the hottest teams in the OUA as received 10 kills from Adam Podstawka and 26 assists from his brother Paul in a 3-0 win over Guelph. Mike Greene had eight digs for the Lions. York, winners of six straight matches, also blanked Windsor 3-0 Saturday. Sholan Trivedi paced the Lions with 13 kills, while Rob Dyba showed some defensive grit with a match-best 15 digs. Quinn led the way with for the Lancers again with 13 kills and 16 points.
