GAELS AND MUSTANGS REGISTER BIG EARLY WINS
The Golden Gaels jumped out to a big lead and then had to hang on to outlast the visiting Varsity Blues in Kingston. The Queen's captured the first two games 25-20 and 26-24 but the Blues took the next two sets 25-22 and 29-27 to force a tiebreaker. In the fifth and final game, Queen's prevailed 15-9. The Gaels were led by standout fourth-year setter Devon Miller (Barrie, Ontario), who contributed 61 assists and four digs. Third-year left side Luke Lichty (St. Catharines) provided match highs of 19 kills and eight digs. Toronto right side Brendan Peel (Whitby, Ontario) scored 23 points, including 20 kills.
Western Ontario 3, McMaster 1
The Mustangs knocked off the undefeated Marauders in four sets to improve to 3-1 after two weeks. Western Ontario took the first two sets 25-19, 25-21 but McMaster fought off the three-set sweep by capturing the next game 26-24 before the Mustangs closed the door 25-20 in the final set. Western Ontario brought a balanced attack to the court as three different players scored 10 or more points, led by fourth-year right side Joshua Chisholm (Toronto) who produced 14 points and 11 kills. Defensively, the Mustangs wouldn't let the ball hit the floor, outdigging McMaster 48-29. Marauders rookie outside hitter Jeremy Groenveld (Welland, Ontario) led all offensive players with 17 points on the night.
