RAMS FINALLY TASTE DEFEAT...TWICE
The York Lions then upset the Rams 3-1 Saturday. Towering outside hitter Paul Podstawka racked up 16 kills and 20 points for the Lions, while Brad Girardo controlled the offensive tempo with 37 assists. York took a 2-0 lead in the match before the Rams rallied to take the third set 25-17. But they had problems in the fourth as the Lions routed them 25-14 to secure the big win. Vandenburg was unstoppable with 19 kills but for the second straight match, his efforts weren't enough for the 2006 silver medalists.
The defending champion Queen's Golden Gaels (9-1) were victorious in their only match of the week, a 3-1 decision over the RMC Paladins Friday. Devon Miller had 34 assists for the Gaels, while Andrew Bridgeman pounded out 14 kills and 18 total points. Mathieu Lorrain had 17 kills for the Paladins, who took the third set 28-26 before falling 25-17 in the fourth. RMC remains the only winless team in the league at 0-11.
Western improved to 8-4 with a 3-0 win over the Windsor Lancers in Windsor Wednesday. Josh Chrisolm had 10 kills for the Mustangs, while teammate Andrew Hinchey tallied 29 assists and five digs. David Binder had nine kills to lead the Lancers (5-7).
McMaster won for the ninth time in 12 matches as they dominated Guelph 3-0 at the Burridge Gym Friday. Steve Murray had nine kills and Sean Panchal had 29 assists for the Marauders, who gave up just 18, 16 and 19 points respectively in the three-set win. Troy Riek led the Gryphs with seven points, all from kills, while four players reached double digits in assists.
The Laurier Golden Hawks came out on top against rival Waterloo Saturday, defeating the Warriors 3-0. Third-year outside hitter Jean-Paul Wilkerd had a match-high 16 kills and 17 points, while teammate Brent Harris led all players with 21 assists. It was Laurier's third win of the season in 12 outings.
OUA play resumes January 12 with two matches.
