NO.7 QUEEN'S TAKES THE WIN FROM THE RAMS, WHILE LAURIER UPSETS THE MUSTANGS
The battle of the top two saw No. 7 Queen’s Golden Gaels (16-2) take a close come from behind victory in five sets over the Ryerson Rams (15-4) this past Saturday. Ryerson took an early 2-0 lead over the Golden Gaels who battled back taking the next three sets with final scores of 16-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-10. Queen’s was led by Jeff Demeza (Calgary, Alberta) who had 28 points, 27 kills and four digs on the night and fourth year setter Devon Miller (Barrie, Ontario) who had 56 assists in a winning effort. Ryerson was again led by fifth year standout Ryan Vandenburg (Wooler, Ontario) who had 26 points, 22 kills and six digs. With the win Queen’s maintains their first place position. two points ahead of Ryerson with a game in hand, heading into this final week of regular season play.
Laurier 3, Western 2
The Laurier Golden Hawks (7-12) upset the Western Mustangs men’s volleyball team (13-6) 3-2 this past Saturday night. In what was a back and forth battle between the two teams Laurier pulled out the eventual fifth set win 15-10 (25-19, 16-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-10). Laurier was led on the night by Jean Paul Wikerd (Kitchener, Ontario) who had 22 points, 16 kills and 10 digs in the win. Fourth year, Brent Harris (Waterloo, Ontario) had 50 assists for the Golden Hawks. Western was led by Josh Chisholm who had 20 points and 20 kills in the match. With the loss, Western now sits in fifth place, two points behind strong McMaster(14-5) and York (14-5) teams who are tied for third with 28 points. It will come down to the final game before playoff match ups will be determined after this final week of play.
