QUEEN'S AND RYERSON EARN BIG WINS
The Golden Gaels were tested to the brink of defeat again but hung on for a five-set thriller against the visiting Marauders. McMaster took the first set 27-25 but Queen's took charge of the middle games, winning 25-16 and 25-19. The match was tied with a nail-biting fourth set in which the visiting team from Hamilton clawed out a 28-26 win, setting up the decisive round where the undefeated Golden Gaels took charge, winning the match 15-10. Third-year outside hitter Jeff Demeza (Calgary) contributed 25 points with 20 kills, two service aces and three blocks while making seven digs. Fourth-year setter Devon Miller (Barrie, Ontario) made 58 assists for the wining side and led all Gaels with eight digs. McMaster was a scrappy unit all night, making 46 digs in total, led by fourth-year left side Parrish Offer (Kingston), who made a match-high 11 digs to go along with his eight kills. McMaster also defended well at the net, outblocking the home side 26-14. Natah Groenveld (Welland, Ontario) made a match-best 11 blocks. With the win, the Gaels lead the OUA with a perfect 5-0 record.
Ryerson 3, Windsor 2
The Rams improved to 4-0 on the season, joining Queen's as the only two undefeated teams left in the OUA, after an exciting 3-2 win over Windsor (23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 17-25, 15-11). Veteran right-side hitter Ryan Vandenburg (Wooler, Ontario) recorded a match-high 31 points on 27 kills and four blocks. Patrick Corriveau (Ottawa) fed off the successful hitting of Vandenburg and totalled 36 assists. Fourth-year Lancers libero Rafael Traczynski (Windsor) led all defenders with 11 digs.
