With the win, the Blues improve to 2-2 and sit in a five-way tie for third in the OUA standings.

Laurier Golden Hawks @ Guelph Gryphons
The Guelph Gryphon men’s volleyball team defeated the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks tonight 3-1 with set scores of 25-22, 25-17, 19-25 and 25-16. The Gryphons advance to 4-1 on the year and complete the weekend sweep, after a victory over Waterloo last night.
The first set began with both teams fighting for points. But the Gryphons pushed hard taking the set 25-22. Guelph led for most of the second set and won 25-17. The third set was even for most part as the teams traded points back and forth until the Golden Hawks charged ahead after the second technical timeout. Laurier used some good blocking and earned two kills by Derek Lapp to move ahead for the first time in the set 16-15. Meanwhile Guelph made some untimely errors that hindered them. The Hawks outscored the Gryphons 9-4 to close out the third set for their only win, 25-19. The Gryphons came out strong in the fourth set, taking both technical time outs. Guelph held a 21-11 lead at one point before the Hawks mounted a small comeback. The Hawks battled back to get to 21-15, but it was too little too late as Winston Rosser got the Gryphons to 24-16 on a pair of kills. Guelph took the game after the Hawks hit the ball out of bounds to earn the 3-1 victory.
The Gryphons were led by Winston Rosser (Whitby, Ont.) with an impressive 21 kills on the night. The Mustangs won by set scores of 22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-18.
Mathieu Poulin led the Mustangs attack with 17 kills and 8 digs. Rookie Garrett May added 16 kills with Reid Halpenny getting 12 kills and 12 digs.
The Mustangs are first in the OUA at 3-0 so far this season.
Toronto Varsity Blues @ Ryerson Rams
Greg McDonald had a break-out game in his first start of the season, tallying 17 kills to lead the Rams to a 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 28-26, 26-24) victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night. A tightly contested affair renewed a brewing rivalry between the two teams after they split their season series last year.
With Luka Milosevic out due to an injury, Porosa brought the former OUA all-rookie selection McDonald off the bench for his first start of the 2010-11 campaign, and it paid big dividends for the now 2-1 Rams.
The first set remained close until Roman Kabanov asserted his presence at the net, blocking three Blues attacks and leading Ryerson to a 16-12 advantage at the second technical timeout. McDonald then scored two of his four kills in the set, giving the Rams a 25-18 win. Toronto's Killian Newman rounded off a couple of kills in the second set, and the Blues would gain an early lead and not relinquish it. They took the second set 20-25.
The teams tightened up their play, and neither could muster a significant advantage in the third set. With the score tied at 21-21, McDonald came up with a timely kill, and blocks by Chris McLaughlin and Kabanov brought set-point up for the Rams. The Blues fought back, in part to an important block by Adam Palmer, and the teams would find themselves even at 26-26. Ryerson quickly went up by one, and then a point by McLaughlin suddenly put them within a set of victory.
The Rams dominated the majority of the fourth set, going up 8-2 at the first technical timeout. Although the Blues fought back to close the gap to 2 points, Kabanov took over at the net once again, reeling off three consecutive blocks to push his team to a 24-18 advantage and a match point. The Varsity Blues showed impressive resilience, and with Palmer serving, they went on a streak, saving six match points to tie the game at 24-24. McDonald quickly rallied his team with a kill to put Ryerson up by one, and rookie setter Aleksa Miladinovic recorded his only block of the game on the final play, stuffing the Blues at the net to give the Rams a 26-24 set win and 3-1 match victory.
Miladinovic recorded 40 assists on the night, while Jake Dysellhof led Toronto with 11 kills and one ace in a losing cause. Palmer was awarded player of the game honours for the Blues.
