Windsor, 0 @ York, 3
The York University Lions men's volleyball team recorded its most dominating victory of the season with a 3-0 win over the visiting Windsor Lancers at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Sunday night (Jan. 9).
Head coach Wally Dyba stuck with the same six players from start to finish and the formula worked as the Lions won 25-20, 25-8, 25-23.
The victory avenged a 3-1 loss to the Lancers last week in the bronze-medal game at the Lions' home tournament, the 32nd annual Excalibur Volleyball Classic. Overall, the two teams have met four times this season and have each won twice.
Tonight's game was the biggest blowout of the four matches between the Lions and Lancers, particularly in the second set. After a narrow first set win, the Lions gave the Lancers virtually no opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the second and won with ease. The third again proved to be close but the Lions managed to stay ahead for the victory.
York team captain Karim Khalil (Mississauga, Ont.) recorded a game-high 13 points on the night, including 12 kills and one service ace. He also had seven digs.
Windsor's top scorer was Harrison Oake (Rodney, Ont.) with 10 points, including seven kills, and added six digs. Teammate Andrew Foster (Holland Landing, Ont.) led all players in the match with 11 digs.
Khalil was one of three Lions to record more than 10 points in the match. Rookie Nikola Sandic (Etobicoke, Ont.) had his best night of the season with 12 points, including 12 kills, and he tied Khalil for a team-high seven digs.
Second-year middle Gregory Ivan (Toronto) had 11 points, five digs and two solo blocks.
With the win, the Lions improved to 3-9 on the season and inched closer to a playoff spot with six points, just two behind seventh-place Waterloo. The loss dropped the Lancers to 6-6 on the season.
