PIONEER PETROLEUMS OUA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named Pioneer Petroleums Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending January 23, 2011.
Each Pioneer Petroleums OUA Athlete of the Week will receive a $25 gift card and a dri-fit T-shirt, courtesy of Pioneer Petroleums.
MALE: Joren Zeeman, Queen’s Gaels, Volleyball
Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., was instrumental in leading the No. 9 Gaels to a pair of important wins over Windsor and No. 5 Western. The fourth year physical and health education major opened the weekend with a 16 kill performance in the Gaels straight set win over the Lancers. Saturday night, Zeeman was a force, picking up 17 kills, six digs and two blocks as Queen’s earned a five-set win over the conference-leading Mustangs. The outside hitter now finds himself ranked in the Top 10 in the OUA and CIS in three major statistical categories, including kills per set, service aces per set and points per set.
FEMALE: Tasia McKenna, Lakehead Thunderwolves, Basketball
Tasia McKenna of Timberlea, N.S., led her Thunderwolves to a weekend sweep over the McMaster Marauders at the Burridge Gym in Hamilton, a first in team history. Over the course of two games, the kinesiology and psychology major totaled 47 points (23.5 PPG), eight assists, and went seven for 16 from behind the arc. In Friday's 71-66 victory, Tasia scored 20 of her team's 22 fourth-quarter points, and totaled 35 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals for the game. In Saturday's 60-57 win, the fifth-year guard had 12 points, three rebounds, six assists and three steals.
