York, 0 @ Guelph, 3 Box Score
The Guelph Gryphons met up with the York Lions on January 29 at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. The Gryphons nearly lost their lead in the second set but were able to take control and finish the game with a quick 3-0 win. Set scores were 24-14, 33-31, and 25-17.
The game opened up in Guelph’s favour, with the team playing methodically and contributing almost no errors. The set score began to rise with the help of Ryan Killeen, (Oakville, ON) Andrew Revie (Guelph, ON) and Winston Rosser’s (Whitby, ON) great action on the frontcourt. The Gryphons built a huge lead and held onto a 12 point advantage for quite some time. The set finished 25-14 for the Gryphons.
The second set was a bit more challenging for Guelph. They managed to take the lead but the Lions were only ever a few points behind. The Lion’s hitters Ray Szeto (Sutton, ON) Gregory Ivan (Toronto, ON) and Nikola Sandic (Etobicoke, ON) kept the Gryphons on their toes with their relentless attacks. The Lions fought hard to keep their score up and before long they had tied it up at 25-25. The two teams battled it out back and forth and it seemed as though it could have been anyone’s set. At last, the Gryphons managed to get a two point advantage and finally took it 33-31.
After the close call of the second set the Gryphons were determined to build momentum and keep it this time. Both Codey Forrest (Port Dover, ON) and Riley McAllister (Whitby, ON) were essential in this set as they ran and dove to keep the ball in play. York put up a good fight but it was no match to the strength of the Gryphon court. Kevin Carey (Grand Prairie, AB) helped close the match with the last couple attacks and Gryphon rookie Marc Wilson (Stratford, ON) fired over the final kill for his team.
The Gryphons were led by Winston Rosser with 16 total points (12 kills, 1 ace, 5 digs) and the Lions were carried by Nikola Sandic with 11 total points (10 kills, 5 digs).
