Western Mustangs @ Laurier Golden Hawks
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks looked to hand the Mustangs their first loss of their season, but fell 3-1 in a very close game.
Laurier set the tempo early, winning the first match 25-23 putting Western on their heels. As an undefeated team, Western kept their composure and stole the second set from Laurier winning by an unexpected score of 25-8. The next set proved better for Western again as Laurier lost their rhythm and lost 25-16. The fourth set was a nail-biter and came down to the last few points. With a motivated Laurier team and a determined Western team the Mustangs proved to be too much for the Hawks winning 29-27.
The Hawks got some good performances from Greg Houston (Chatham, Ont.) who put in for 10 kills, five digs, and five assisted blocks and Cameron Wheelan (Barrie, Ont.) who didn't post his usual plus ten kills but was effective defensively adding nine digs and two total blocked shots.
Western was fortunate to have a great performance from Phil James who hit the court for 10 kills resulting in a good attack percentage of .474. Matt Poulin contributed 15 kills and 9 digs in the win while Matt Waite had 13 kills.
Windsor Lancers @ Waterloo Warriors
On their first road trip of the 2010-11 season, the Lancer men’s volleyball team split a pair of five set games against the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks.
Windsor faced the Warriors on Friday night and took the hosts in a hard fought five sets 3-2 (26-24, 27-29, 11-25, 25-17, 15-11).
Kyle Williamson led the game with 16 kills, 10 digs. Harrison Oake and Josh Edwards each contributed 11 kills in the tough win.
RMC Paladins @ Guelph Gryphons
The Guelph Gryphon men’s volleyball team defeated the visiting RMC Paladins this evening 3-0, with set scores of 25-9, 25-19, and 25-19. The win puts the Gryphon’s record to 5-2, and keeps them in 3rd place of OUA rankings; leaving the RMC Paladins still without a win this season and a record of 0-7.
In the first set the Gryphons would own the court, defeating the Paladins 25-9. Guelph’s strong attacks would render the Paladins defenseless. The second set would produce a burst of energy for the Paladins, who would work to capitalize on Gryphon errors. However their efforts would not prove enough, as Guelph would dominate the latter part of the set and end it at 25-19. The third set saw left side, Kyle Wilson (Stratford, Ont.) for Guelph demonstrate his strength, and accrue five attacks during the game. RMC would gain control during the beginning of the third set, however the Gryphon offence led by Patrick Strzalkowski (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Andrew Whitaker (Sharon, Ont.) would bring the Gryphons to victory with a score of 25-19.
The Gryphons were led in scoring by Andrew Whitaker with 7 kills and Patrick Strzlkowski (6 kills, 1 ace). Also leading the Gryphons were Andrew McWilliam (6 kills, 2 aces) and Jamie Stamler (6 kills, 1 ace). Kevin Carey would be the starting setter for the Gryphons and tally 32 assists. Andrew Revie would be named Player of the Match with 3 kills, and 5 aces.
For the RMC Paladins, Paul Demers was named Player of the Match and he would lead their scoring accruing six kills, one ace and three digs.
Queen’s Gaels @ McMaster Marauders
You can always be sure that a clash between the McMaster Marauders and Queen’s Gaels will be an entertaining one and this afternoon was no different as the Marauders narrowly edged the Gaels, 3-1, at the Burridge Gym Sunday.
The loss comes in the form of Queens’ first this season, after entering today’s match up at 7-0 and ranked tenth in the CIS. Not only do the Marauders improve to 6-2, they have bumped Queen’s out of their first place tie with 8-0 Western.
The Marauders have now won six out of their last seven conference meetings with the Gaels.
The Gaels were ahead by one after winning the first set 22-25, but the Marauders evened the score with a five point (25-20) win in the second. McMaster took the lead after the third (25-15) then Queen’s tied things back up with a 23-25 fourth set. The entire audience was on the edge of their seats in the fifth set as the teams traded points but the Marauders came out on top, 15-12, for the win.
Rookie middle Jori Mantha (Vanier, Ont.) had another stellar game for the Maroon scoring 23 of the team’s 69 points off 15 kills, four aces and six solo blocks. Kevin Stevens (Winnipeg, Man.) and Tyler Santoni (Kingston, Ont.) both added 14 points each while Josh Lichty (St. Catharines, Ont.) had 17 digs.
Bryan Fautley (Oakville, Ont.) led Queen's with 18 kills and 21 points.
Ryerson Rams @ York Lions
The York University Lions men’s volleyball team earned its second victory of the season by a 3-1 score over the Ryerson Rams on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 21) at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Third-year middle Felipe Humana-Paredes (Toronto) earned player of the game honours for York after a dominating performance at the net. He led all players with seven blocks, including several at key moments, and totalled 12 points in the match. He now leads all players in the CIS with 24 blocks on the season.
The victory did not come easy for the Lions. They found themselves behind early, losing the first set 25-22 thanks to standout performances by Ryerson’s Greg McDonald (Thamesville, Ont.), who scored 20 points on the day, and Luka Milosevic, who chipped in 10 points while handling much of the important serving duties.
In the second set the Lions erupted with rookie outside hitter Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.) and Humana-Paredes stealing the thunder away from the Rams.
The set began with two straight scores from third-year Lion Karim Khalil (Mississauga, Ont.), who nailed one spike so hard that it ricocheted off the opposing team’s fingertips and went flying into the ceiling. Khalil’s show-stopping play seemed to inspire Szeto, who cut a late Rams lead by one point to 21-20 following a gorgeous touch strike. Fittingly, it was Szeto who provided the set-winning kill to even the score at 1-1.
Khalil finished the match with six kills and nine points.
The third set was Szeto’s show again as he wowed the crowd with a terrific sequence, first spiking the ball hard for a decisive hit and then following with a hard-hitting block to push his team’s lead to 9-5.
Second-year outside hitter Sam Song (North York, Ont.) made a huge kill that sent shockwaves through the stands and gave the Lions a 16-9 lead they would not relinquish.
The final set showcased the shot-blocking prowess of Humana-Paredes as he came up with several decisive blocks, including the match winner.
