BRIGHTWELL TAKES BRONZE AT SENIOR CANADIAN WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Friday, Brightwell successfully defended her Canadian junior title by taking gold at 82 kg but Saturday she was up against the best of the best in Canadian wrestling and she served notice that she could be a force in Canadian wrestling with her bronze medal performance.
The Guelph native is this year's OUA champion and CIS silver medalist at 82 kg and also received the prestigious Canada Wrestling Bob McLeod Scholarship. Wrestling comes naturally to Brightwell as her father Wayne was a Canadian Olympic and national team wrestler, Commonwealth Games gold medalist, and multiple Canadian champion.
In other Lakehead and CIS wrestling news, former Lakehead star Katie Patroch went 3-0 in her matches for Team Canada at the Female World Cup of Wrestling Duals Meet in Taiyuan, China. Patroch's efforts helped lead Canada to the gold medal teams duals final on Sunday against the hosts from China. Canadian Olympic gold medalist and CIS champion from Simon Fraser Carol Huynh also won her three matches as did two-time Olympic medalist and CIS champion from Brock Tonya Verbeek.
