THUNDERWOLVES WIN FIRST-EVER OUA MEN'S WRESTLING CROWN
LONDON, Ont. - The Brock Badgers reign as Ontario University Athletics (OUA) men's wrestling champions will continue for a 16th season, however, for the first time, they have company. The Lakehead Thunderwolves finished tied for first place with the Badgers with 59 points at the OUA wrestling championships in London, Ont., meaning a co-title in the men's division for 2010.
It is the first-ever OUA men's wrestling championship in Thunderwolves history. Fittingly, Lakehead's Brock Curtis was named men's coach of the year. The OUA women's title was a little more clear cut, as the Badgers won their third straight championship.
Thunderwolves who earned gold medals included Gaston Tardiff (Calgary) in the 57 kg division, Dustin Helwig (Toronto) in the 61 kg weight class and Corey Lee (LaSalle, Ont.) in the 82 kg division. Tardiff's victory over Brock's Tim Clement (Barrie, Ont.) in the gold medal match proved to be the difference for Lakehead in its share of the men's title. Brock's lone gold medalist was Spencer Bruch (Stoney Creek, Ont.) in the men's 90 kg.
Other Thunderwolves earning hardware were Preston Mikulasik taking silver in the heavyweight division, and bronze medalists Steve Gross (Cambridge, Ont.) in the 54 kg class, Jason Bresele (Thunder Bay, Ont.) in the 65 kg, Scott Christian (Brampton, Ont.) in the 68 kg and Brandon Gardner (Grand Prairie, Alta.) in the 90 kg.
The most outstanding male wrestler was Shujon Mazumber (Toronto) of the Toronto Varsity Blues. Mazumber won gold in the 54 kg weight class over Aaron Fabiano (Windsor, Ont.) of Brock. Dene Ringuette (Pickering, Ont.) was the only other Varsity Blue to earn gold in the men's 76 kg weight class.
Jacob Jagas (Kitchener, Ont.) of the Guelph Gryphons was named male rookie of the year claiming the 72 kg division. Other Gryphons striking gold included Kevin Iwasa-Madge (Milton, Ont.) in the 65 kg and Kyle Grant (Whitby, Ont.) as heavyweight champion of OUA.
Ryan Blake (Stoney Creek, Ont.) of the McMaster Marauders won gold in the 68 kg weight class. All gold medalists are also named OUA first-team all-stars. Brock women's wrestlers Jasmine Mian (Barrie, Ont.) in the 48 kg division, Diana Ford (Kentville, N.S.) in the 51 kg, Laura Steffler (Whitby, Ont.) in the 67 kg and Deborah Jehu (Greenbank, Ont.) in the 72 kg all won gold and first-team all-star recognition. Steffler was also named outstanding female wrestler. Brock teammates Stephanie Riopel (Timmins, Ont.) and Lee-Anna Taillefer (Sudbury, Ont.) were silver medalists in the 55 kg and 82 kg weight classes, respectively, and Natasha Chang (Cayuga, Ont.) took bronze in the 59 kg. The Badgers earned 61 points in total. Brock's Marty Calder was named women's coach of the year.
Larissa D'Alleva (Prince Albert, Ont.) of the Mustangs was named female rookie of the year after winning the 63 kg division. Teammate Brianne Barry (London, Ont.) earned gold in the 55 kg division. Western silver medalists included Jennifer Nguyen (Mississauga, Ont.) in the 51 kg weight class and Liz Sera (Winnipeg) in the 59 kg division.
Thunderwolves who earned gold medals included Aislynn Torfason (Winnipeg) in the 59 kg category and Nicole Plummer (Windsor, Ont.) in the 82 kg. Lakehead wrestlers earning silver included Laurel Knowles (Desbarats, Ont.) in the 63 kg and Katelyn Proulx (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) in the 72 kg.
Rounding out the silver medalists and second-team all-stars were Melissa Biscardi (Toronto) of the Varsity Blues in the 48 kg division and Allison Leslie (Fergus, Ont.) of the Gryphons in the 67 kg.
