GOLD, SILVER FOR MUSTANGS TEAMS AT JUNIOR WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
For the second straight year, London-Western won the overall women's junior (under-20) team title.
Rookie Mustangs Brianne Barry (London, Ont.), in the 55 kg division, and Larissa D'Alleva (Prince Albert, Ont.) in the 63 kg division both won gold in their respective divisions.
London-Western scored 46 points, well ahead of second place Brock Wrestling Club which placed second with 27 points, ahead of third L'Essor who scored 12 points each.
Mustangs Christine Schmidt (London, Ont.) in the 72 kg division and rookie Sahana Mazumder (Toronto) in the 48 kg division both took silver medals while Jennifer Archibald (Toronto) won the bronze in the 67 kg weight division. Schmidt, who attended Clarke Road in London, defeated Mustang rookie teammate Monica Varallo (London, Ont.) of London's Mother Theresa S.S., who placed fifth at 72 kg weight class.
"We did well as a team because of our depth," said coach Ray Takahashi. "Christine (Schmidt) and Jennifer (Archibald) both had great performances."
Meanwhile for the junior men's team, four Mustangs rookies brought back four medals to assist an overall second place team finish by the London-Western Wrestling Club at the Ontario Junior Wrestling Championships.
Brothers and Mustangs teammates Scott Wheatley (London, Ont.) and Shawn Wheatley (London, Ont.) who both attended South Secondary in London, Ont. both placed second in the 84 and 96 kg weight classes respectively.
Adam Argue (London, Ont.) of the 66 kg division and Eric Jacobson (Thorndale, Ont.) of the 74 kg both won hard fought matches to win bronze in their respective weight classes.
It was an impressive showing for London-Western winning the overall women's title and placing second in the men's.
"It shows our program has good overall depth in both men's and women's teams and shows promise in our future," Takahashi said. "London-Western is our primary feeder program and we get many good local recruits."
Other Mustangs placing in the Top 6 were Adam Burns (Mississauga, Ont.) placed sixth at 55 kg, while Josh Proctor (Iona Station, Ont.) also grabbed a sixth place finish in the 66 kg division.
The Mustangs will be at their home tournament, the Western Open, Saturday, Feb. 6, in Thames Hall Gymnasium. It will be the last OUA tournament prior to the OUA championships which the Mustang's also host, Feb. 20 in Alumni Hall.
