OUA'S WOMEN OF INFLUENCE: Brock's Jasmine Mian
HAMILTON, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) will recognize the top female scholar-athletes from across the province at the eighth annual Women of Influence Luncheon on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (South Building – Hall G), 255 Front Street West in Toronto.
The event honours female student-athletes who have excelled in their chosen sports, fields of study and community involvement. This year's guest speaker will be tennis star Venus Williams. The legendary tennis star is a winner of five Wimbledon titles, seven Grand Slams, 41 WTA tour titles and three Olympic gold medals. Off the court, Williams excels in a variety of areas including interior design, fashion and authoring two books.
Today’s honoured female athlete is Brock University’s Jasmine Mian. Jasmine’s career as a student-athlete over four years has been outstanding. In her second year of competing in OUA wrestling, Jasmine finished with an individual gold and helped the Brock Badgers take home the team gold. At the 2009 CIS championships of the same year, Jasmine earned the individual bronze.
Last season Jasmine’s career as a wrestler on the national stage sky rocketed. The Midhurst, Ontario native won a silver medal at both the 2009 Canadian Sr. Championships as well as the 2009 Ontario Sr. Championships. During her third year at Brock, Jasmine’s hard work and determination paid off when she lead her team to another gold at the OUA championships and won the OUA individual gold. At the 2010 CIS Championships, Jasmine improved from the previous year by earning a silver medal.
In the classroom, this wrestler has been named both an OUA All-Academic and a CIS All-Academic three times. Jasmine has received the Brock President’s Award three times and won the Undergraduate Student Research Award for her efforts in Brock University’s Infant and Child Development lab researching the developmental trajectory of face perception.
Join OUA as Williams speaks about her career on and off the courts, and how she set a new standard for all female athletes around the world. Tickets to the luncheon can be purchased by registering at https://register.womenofinfluenceinc.ca/woi/register.aspx.

Q: What is your proudest academic achievement?
A: I am currently studying face perception at Brock University’s Infant and Child Development Lab. My proudest academic achievement is being accepted to present my research on Identity-Expression Adaptation Aftereffects at the Vision Sciences Society conference in Naples, Florida.
Q: What is your proudest athletic achievement?
A: Placing 3rd at the 2010 World University Championships in Torino, Italy.
Q: What is your most memorable community related moment?
A: My most memorable community related moment was being a part of Brock University’s community outreach program called “IMPACT”. I was able to share the positive experiences that I have had as a student athlete with at-risk youth and encourage them to make sport a part of their lives.
Q: What woman has most influenced you, and why?
A: My mom, Catherine Jones has been the most influential woman in my life. Through her actions, she has taught me the value of hard work and the importance of strength in both mind and body. She has encouraged me to seek excellence in both sports and academics. She is constantly pushing herself to achieve more and from her example, I have come to expect the same from myself. She has made me into a fighter and for that, I am eternally grateful.
Q: If you could sit down to dinner with any woman, who would it be, and why?
A: I would sit down to dinner with Ellen DeGeneres because I think every woman can learn a lot from her. She is an amazingly strong woman, who has never let hardship stop her from succeeding. She stayed true to herself in the face of adversity and has used her humour and fame to make a positive impact on people.
Q: What are your future plans?
A: I plan to attend graduate school with the hope of becoming a psychology professor. Athletically, I intend to wrestle the 2012 Olympic trials and continue competing as a member of both Team Canada and the Brock Badgers.
