DEFENDING CHAMPION MUSTANGS BEGIN SEASON WITH CONSECUTIVE WINS
The Ottawa Gee-Gees also began the season 2-0 as they swept past the Lakehead Thunderwolves, winning both matches 3-0. Ottawa got 10 kills from Christine Lamey in the first win, along with a match-high 24 assists from Laura Simons. Melissa Merilainen had eight kills to lead the Lakehead attack. The Gee-Gees won Saturday’s rematch by scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-21. Joanie Beauregard-Veillette had eight kills in the three games, tops on Ottawa. Simons had 22 more assists and Manon Ouellette led all players in the match with 11 digs.
The Toronto Varsity Blues also won their first two matches of the 2005 season, as they beat the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 Saturday and the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-0 Sunday. Against Waterloo, Toronto won the games 25-18, 25-15 and 25-19, with Mila Miguel and Melinda Lee both registering a match-best 11 kills. Lee also had 12 digs. Gabriella Lesniak had two service aces for the Warriors. Miguel added 12 more kills and 12 digs against the Golden Hawks.
In other games this week, Brock defeated Guelph 3-1, Laurier defeated Ryerson 3-0, McMaster went to Windsor and beat the Lancers 3-0, and Queen’s won three straight games to beat RMC 3-0. On Sunday, Windsor rebounded and defeated York 3-2, while Waterloo got past Ryerson in five games. The Rams won the first two games of the match 32-20 and 25-17 but the Warriors responded with three straight, including a 15-8 win in the fifth game. Hilary Lemieux had 16 kills for Waterloo in the match.
