DIVISION LEADERS ROLL, WHILE SALAS-CHAVEZ LEADS LIONS TO THREE WINS
The Toronto Varsity Blues kept their stranglehold on first place in the OUA East with a 3-1 over the Ryerson Rams Wednesday at the Kerr Hall Gym. Asya Danilova had a match-high 15 kills and 10 digs for the Blues, who improved to 17-1 on the season. Ali Greey led the Toronto attack with 25 assists. Erin Gallagher had 15 kills for the Rams.
The second-place Ottawa Gee-Gees kept up their solid form with a 3-0 blanking of the Queen's Golden Gaels Wednesday. Third-year Kanata, ON native Christine Lamey provided the power again for the Gee-Gees, recording a match-high 16 kills to go along with 12 digs. Lamey ranks second in the OUA with 3.66 kills per game. Laura Simons had 33 assists for Ottawa. Sally Speake had 10 points for Queen's, while Briana Marchildon led all players with 16 digs. The Gee-Gees also defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-1 at Montpetit Hall Saturday. Lamey had a match-high 20 kills in this one, while teammate Melissa Maddocks added another 17. Danielle Walker, second in the OUA with 222 kills, had 19 for Laurier. The Hawks had won their other match earlier in the week as they beat the Windsor Lancers 3-1 in Windsor. Kaitlin Sauder had 17 kills for Laurier, while Melissa St. Amant led all player with 23 digs. Windsor jumped out to a 1-0 lead but Laurier swept the next three sets, including a 25-18 score in the fifth, to take the match. Brianna Binder had 12 kills for the Lancers.
The Western Mustangs continued to roll as they beat the Guelph Gryphons 3-1 Wednesday and then blanked the RMC Paladins 3-0 Saturday. Melissa Mann led the Mustangs with 10 kills and 15 points against Guelph. Kendall Milne had 14 kills for the Gryphons. Lauren Cosentino led all players with 23 assist in the win over RMC, while Ashley Jones recorded seven kills. Leah West had nine kills for the Paladins. Western is 17-1 atop the OUA's West Division.
Gabby Lesniak had a match-high 15 kills to help the Waterloo Warriors defeat the Brock Badgers 3-1 Wednesday. Lesniak also added 14 digs, while Jara Brunt led all players with 18 assists. Waterloo improved to 9-9 Saturday as they beat Guelph 3-2. Lesniak and Sarah Waters had eight kills each for the Warriors. Naomi Brown had 11 kills and 10 digs for the Gryphons.
Elsewhere around the league, Elizabeth Salas-Chavez had 14 kills to help the York Lions defeat the McMaster Marauders 3-1 in Thursday's only OUA match. Salas-Chavez continued to dominate in a pair of matches against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on the weekend. The native of Mexico City posted a match-high 13 kills in a 3-0 win over the Wolves Saturday and then added another match-high 14 kills Sunday as the Lions beat Lakehead 3-1. York has won four straight matches and sit two points behind the second-place Gee-Gees in the East. Bethany Petkoff had 15 kills as the Lancers beat Queen's 3-2 Saturday. Also on Saturday, Brock beat Ryerson 3-2. The Lancers finished the week off at 2-1 as Andrea Easnor tallied 10 points in Windsor's 3-0 defeat of RMC.
