RYERSON TAKES GOLD AT QUEEN'S INVITATIONAL
"The Queen's coach came and told me there were no silver medals for the runner-up," said Ryerson bench boss Bob Cholette. "We didn't want to come home without any hardware so we had to win the gold."
Ryerson's Erin Gallagher (pictured) earned MVP honours, while libero Anjela Wilson was named to the tournament all-star team. It's the second time the Rams have won the tournament; the last was in 2002.
Cholette credits to the win to a week of holiday training in Clearwater, Florida.
"The trip drastically improved our team," he said. "It was really good for us and got everyone on the same page."
The extra practice in sunny Florida gave some bench players much needed playing time and that paid off as starters players Tara DiGuiseppe and Jen Williams were absent from the tournament for work and family reasons.
"It's the first tournament some of our girls have won and I'm proud of them," said Cholette.
In the event's third place match, Sherbrooke College defeated St. FX.
On Thursday, Ryerson travels north to York University for their first league game of 2006. In a meeting earlier this season, the Lions won 3-0. The Rams next home game is Sat. Jan 14 at 2 p.m. against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
