PAOLINI AND MORRISSEY HELP LANCERS BUILD ON WESTERN UPSET WITH ANOTHER WIN
The Ottawa Gee-Gees, second in the OUA East with an 11-2 record, stayed within striking distance of the division-leading Toronto Varsity Blues by rallying to beat the York Lions 3-2 at Montpetit Hall. York forced the match to a fifth set by dominating the fourth 25-14 but Ottawa regrouped and won 15-10 to finish off the match. Christine Lamey had 20 kills, brining her to 142 on the season, sixth in the OUA. Rachel Runnels had 33 assists for Ottawa. York had begun the week on a positive note, beating the Brock Badgers 3-2 in a back-and-forth five-set match. Elizabeth Salas Chavez, a third-year Toronto native, paced York with 19 kills and 21 assists. Miranda Midgley had 16 kills for the Badgers, while Shauna Peddle added 15 more.
The Waterloo Warriors (6-8) crept closer to the .500 mark after registering a pair of victories, the first, a 3-0 blanking of the RMC Paladins. The match was relatively tight in the first two sets until the Warriors, led by Hamilton native Gabby Lesniak's 12 kills, ran away with the third set 25-11. Lana Vanderlee had 35 assists for Waterloo. Brenda Andrews had 12 kills for the Paladins. The Warriors were also perfect against the Queen's Golden Gaels, defeating the visitors from Kingston 3-0. Lesniak had another 15 kills in this match, while Hillary Lemieux had 12 kills and a match-high 11 digs.
Western rebounded from the stunning upset by Windsor to post a convincing 3-1 win over Brock. The Mustangs dropped the first set 26-24 but played with purpose in the next three sets, never conceding more than 18 points, including a convincing 25-10 win in the fourth. Melissa Mann, the OUA leader and third in the CIS with 178 kills, had 19 in the win to go along with 11 digs, while Lauren Cosentino had a match-best 49 assists for the 12-1 West leaders.
The McMaster Marauders remain close on the Mustangs heels with a 3-1 win over the Ryerson Rams. Melonie Allin had 12 kills for Mac, while teammate Cary Welch added 10 more and 17 digs. Erin Gallagher paced Ryerson with 13 kills. McMaster did lose to the East leaders Toronto 3-0 Sunday. Ali Greey led the Blues with 27 assists, while Asya Danilova recorded 10 kills. Toronto also beat the Guelph Gryphons 3-0 Saturday.
In other action around the league, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks won both of their matches this week, 3-1 over the Queen's Golden Gaels Friday and 3-0 over the Paladins Saturday. Ryerson got 15 kills from Brianne Koning in a 3-2 win over Guelph.
