OUA ANNOUNCES MENS VOLLEYBALL ALL-STARS
HAMILTON, ON - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the 2004-05 men's volleyball all-stars and major award winners. The Ryerson University Rams claimed two of the major awards starting with Ryan Vandenburg as the league's Most Valuable Player. Vandenburg has led the league in several statistics, including an impressive 4.94 kills per game. Ryerson's Lukas Porosa claimed the Libero of the Year title with a notable 2.5 digs per set. Peter Hrkal, from McMaster University, collected Rookie of the Year honours for his team high 3.34 kills per game. Receiving the Dale Iwanocko Sportsman nomination for the second straight year is Brian Fuchs, from the University of Waterloo Warriors, for his academic and athletic achievements. The prestige of being Coach of the Year goes to the Western Mustangs' Jim Sage.
Among the OUA all-stars competing in this week's best of three Championship series is Western's Peter Sidler, who ranked third in OUA leaders with 3.83 kills per game. The Mustangs opponents in championship, the York University Lions, obtained two spots on the all-star list with Ryan Anderson and Jason Kinoshita. 2001-02 West Division Rookie of the Year Jordan Reynolds, from the University of Guelph, made the all-star list. Freshman Marauder Peter Hrkal and Dave Quinn, from the University of Windsor, also garnered first team accolades.
In game one of OUA Championship action last night, the York Lions battled back from a two-set deficit, to take a one game lead over the Western Mustangs in the best-of-three series. The Lions found themselves quickly on their heels as Western dominated the opening two sets with big plays and poised defense. Western constantly contested York's defense, especially the blocking aspect, which had trouble stopping Western's hitters early on.
The Mustangs held the lead for most of the first two frames and clearly outplayed the Lions (25-22, 25-21). York responded with a more energetic effort in the third frame, kicking off a 4-0 run to take the lead and carrying it throughout the set. The Mustangs fought back trailing by no more than one point, until the Lions ran away with it to claim the 25-20 victory. Powered by better defense and shot-blocking, the Lions also won the fourth set 25-23 to stay alive.
Both teams fought hard on the defensive end, diving for loose balls, and making spectacular plays in the fifth frame. York played by far its best game of the match and never trailed. Sholan Trivedi became the hero of the night when his match-point spike slipped off the hand of a Western defender to give York the 18-15 victory.
First team all-star Ryan Anderson led all players with a game-high 25 kills, while fellow all-star Lion setter Jason Kinoshita had a game-high 63 assists and nine digs. Western standout Peter Sidler had the highest Mustang kill-total with 22. Adam Dumond contributed 16 kills, while Alex Jerome added 14 kills. Both Jerome and Andrew Deryck led the team in digs with 14 each.
Game two takes place Thursday night at Western. Game time is 7:00 pm.
