MCMASTER'S HRKAL PICKS UP CIS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Caledon East, Ont. native Peter Hrkal is only the second member of the McMaster Marauders to win the CIS rookie of the year award, after Mike Chaloupka in 1990-91. This season, the 6-foot-5, 205-pound left-side hitter from Robert F. Hall Sec School led the Marauders and ranked fourth in the OUA in kills with an average of 3.27 per game, while placing first on the team in scoring and fifth in the conference with an average of 3.82 points per game. Hrkal was also the team leader in solo blocks and the fourth best Marauder at aces and blocking assists.
On Feb. 22, Hrkal led McMaster to its first playoff win in 10 years with an 18-point, 16-kill effort in a 3-2 OUA quarterfinal defeat of Queen's. This outstanding freshman is a two-time member of the Ontario Provincial team (2003-2005), and spent 2004 as a member of the Canadian junior national team. Prior to attending McMaster, Hrkal had a successful high school career at Robert F. Hall advancing to the "AAAA" OFSSAA championship. He also attended the 2004 Canadian U18 championships in Moncton with the Scarborough Falcons. The kinesiology student also excels in the classroom and is a recipient of a Sport Alliance of Ontario, James Worrall Athletic Development Scholarship.
