W-HOCKEY: Laurier, Queen's, Guelph pulling away from the pack
KINGSTON, Ont. (January 11, 2013) - The No. 5 Queen's Gaels (15-2-1) offence led the women's hockey team to a 3-1 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks (7-8-2) in women's hockey at the Kingston Memorial Centre Friday night.
Despite a dominantly offensive first period for the Gaels, outshooting the Ridgebacks 15-2, they were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances early in the game.
The Gaels opened the scoring at the 5:06 mark of the second period with a goal scored by Courtenay Jacklin (Regina) with assists from Chelsey Verbeek (Beiseker, Alta.) and Danielle Girard (Sarnia, Ont.). Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) added a powerplay goal less than a minute later at the 6:02 mark putting the Gaels up 2-0; Katie Duncan (Waterloo, Ont.) and Samantha Regier (Beachburg, Ont.) had the helpers on the goal. Mid-way through the second frame the Ridgebacks cut the Gaels lead in half when UOIT's Samantha Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) added a powerplay goal, bringing the score to 2-1.
In an action packed and even-paced third period, the Gaels managed to hold on. Pilon capped off the game as she was able to add an empty-net goal to solidify the win for the Gaels. The game's final score was 3-1.
Karissa Savage (Calgary) had 16 saves for the Gaels, while Cassie Charette (Ottawa) stopped 38 shots for the Ridgebacks.

Toronto @ Laurier
WATERLOO, Ont. (January 11, 2013) - The No. 4 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team (15-1-2) scored five second period goals as they defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues (9-8-1) 6-1 on Friday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
Fifth year forward Caitlin Muirhead of Waterloo, Ont., keyed the offensive attack as she scored twice and added an assist to lead all players with three points on the night.
Three other Hawks registered multi-point games in Laurier's third straight OUA victory including Tammy Freiburger of Wingham, Ont., who scored the game-winning goal while also chipped in with two assists in the win.
Goaltender Kayla Brown of Lively, Ont., making her seventh start of the season, turned away 28 of the 29 shots she faced to pick up her sixth win of the year.
After a relatively quite first period in which the two teams combined for just 15 shots on net, the Hawks stepped up their play in the second period. Laurier got on the board first when Devon Skeats of Whitby, Ont., scored her 11th goal of the year just three minutes into the frame. That goal was quickly followed by tallies from Freiburger and Emily Kekewich of Kingston, Ont., as Laurier grabbed a 3-0 lead.
Toronto would find the back of the net thanks to Callie Bazak's (Peterborough, Ont.) seventh of the season but Jessie Hurrell of Palgrave, Ont., and Muirhead scored before the period was out to give the Hawks a 5-1 lead.
Muirhead would round out the scoring in the third period with a powerplay goal, her sixth of the season.
With the win, the Hawks maintain their hold on first place in the OUA after the No. 5 Queen's Gaels (15-2-1) defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks (7-8-2) 3-1 earlier in the night.

January 12 - Queen's @ York
The York University Lions women's hockey team played host to the No. 5 Queen's Gaels on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 12), dropping a 5-2 decision at Canlan Ice Sports at the team's fifth annual Roar for a Cure game.
The opening frame kicked off slowly as both teams were feeling each other out, limiting the offensive scoring chances and having most of the play in the neutral zone.
York would get the first scoring chance of the game on a nice shot from the slot, but it was turned away by Queen's goalie Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.). However, the Lions would strike first on a shot that bounced off the boards right in front of the net for an easy tap in for fifth-year forward and team captain Chloe Milano (Maple, Ont.).
The Lions then got the first power play shortly thereafter but were unable to capitalize. The Lions continued to forecheck for the rest of the period and were also stingy on defence, and at the end of one stanza the score remained 1-0.
The second period saw the Gaels eager to get on the board and tie the game, as they came out quickly and took the play to the Lions.
York goalie Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) made a nice breakaway save to keep it 1-0, but shortly after the Gaels would even the score on a shot from the slot by winger Samantha Regier (Bleachburg, Ont.).
The Lions responded with some opportunities of their own but were unable to take advantage as Dodd-Moher stood tall. They finally took the lead on a power play, on a hard clapper from the top of the circle by defender Kristen Barbara (Mount Hope, Ont.) at the midway point of the period.
The Gaels continued to put the pressure on the Lions and earn a couple of power plays in a row, giving them a two-man advantage. It wouldn't take long before the Gaels would tie the game on a goal by center Kristin Smith (Toronto).
The Lions appeared to be energized by the goal and would end the period playing better hockey, but the score remained tied at two heading into the final frame.
In the third period both squads came out playing tentatively as neither team appeared to want to give up the go-ahead goal. The Lions had the first real scoring chance but it was turned away by Dodd-Moher.
Unfortunately for the Lions, winger Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) scored shortly after to give the Gaels their first lead of the game at 3-2. The floodgates opened after that, as Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) and Brittany each tallied another to put the game out of reach.
Lee played well in net despite allowing five goals as she had a number of key saves to keep the game close during the first two periods. She finished with 27 saves on 32 shots.
The McHaffie sisters, who combined for a total of five points, including three goals, led the Gaels offence. Dodd-Moher finished with 17 saves on 19 shots.
The loss drops the Lions to 4-11-2 in conference play and they are currently ninth in the OUA standings. The Gaels improved to 15-2-1 with the victory.
Saturday's contest was also York's fifth annual Roar for a Cure game, started by former captain Jessica Turi to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. The Lions raised $750 at the game thanks to ticket sales and prize raffles.

Western @ Guelph
GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphon women’s hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs 3-1 today (Jan. 12) at the Gryphon Centre. Winners of seven straight, the Gryphons advance to 14-3-2 on the season while the Mustangs drop to 12-4-1.
Tamara Bell (Guelph, Ont) was the first to strike on the scoreboard for her eighth on the season. She was helped out by Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont) who scored the final two goals for the Gryphons for her seventh and eighth goals respectively of the year. Western’s Stacey Scott (London, Ont) scored her ninth of the season as the lone goal scorer for the Mustangs.
The first period opened up with both teams creating strong opportunities in scoring territory, but neither squads were able to push it past the defensive front to take control. After several unsuccessful attempts, the Mustang forwards were able to get the puck through the neutral zone to create a 3-on-2 opportunity only to be stomped out by Gryphon goalie Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, Ont.) strong play in the crease. However, Guelph's Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont) was sent to the box on the ensuing scramble behind the net. Guelph's penalty kill was pivotal in keeping the Mustang forwards out of scoring range to create excellent short-handed opportunities.
As the dying seconds of the penalty clicked down, Pinkerton's return to the ice created an immediate chance for Jenna Lanzarotta (Mississauga, Ont) to feed Tamara Bell (Guelph, Ont) in the slot to hammer home Guelph's go-ahead at 7:58. But after troubling the Western defence for the majority of the first, Tara Cation (Caledon, Ont) was able to push the puck to Stacey Scott (London, Ont) to squeak in the tying goal at 12:54.
After a minute of play in the second period, Western's Katelyn Gosling (London, Ont) was called for interference to give the Gryphons an early one-man advantage. The Gryphons were able to move the puck smoothly in the Western zone to allow Kimberley Wong (Mississauga, Ont) a shot from the point. Jessica Pinkerton was ready in the crease to provide the misdirection to regain a one-goal Gryphon lead at 1:20 in the second.
In the second, Brittney Crawford (Guelph, Ont) was sent to the bin putting the pressure on Guelph's penalty kill. And just as Crawford's penalty was winding down, she was joined by Jenna Lanzarotta to give the Mustangs a 5-on-3 advantage. The Gryphon penalty kill remained strong to continue the Mustang's powerplay drought as they dropped to 0-5 at the end of two. The Gryphons were able to hold onto their lead thanks to strong defensive play to end the second at 2-1.
The Mustangs came into the final frame with pace to control a fierce tempo with rookie forward Kryshanda Green (Caledon, Ont) making a strong drive at the net. But Stephanie Nehring playing in her first game of the season was determined to hold down her crease and shut down the first of two Western shots in the first ten minutes. Green continued her tenacious play by breaking through the Gryphon defenders but was unable to sneak past Nehring who slid across to push the puck away to hold onto her 2-1 lead.
Wasting no opportunities, Guelph's Jessica Pinkerton was able to sneak her second of the night at 9:37 in the third, through a jumble of bodies in front of the Western net to boost her team to a 3-1 advantage. Christine Grant (Mississauga, Ont) and Amanda Parkins (Kitchener, Ont) were there on the assist.
With 3:39 left on the clock, the Mustangs found themselves in a 5-on-3 opportunity. After the Western coaches pulled Katie Jacobs, the Gryphons faced a 3-man deficit but were able to kill the powerplay by continuously keeping the Mustangs out of scoring position.

Waterloo @ Ryerson
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams women's hockey team dropped a tight 2-1 game in overtime to the visiting Waterloo Warriors Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Bailey Bradt (Ilderton, Ont.) notched the game-winner going top shelf with a loose puck 2:58 into the extra frame.
After a furious third period forecheck, Ryerson's Jessica Hartwick (Brampton, Ont.) finally tied the game with only 5:11 remaining in regulation. Her point shot was assisted by Stephanie Chiste (Nobleton, Ont.) just 25 seconds into a Rams power play.
Kelly MacLean (St. George, Ont.) scored the first goal of the game for the Warriors one minute into the second period. The power play marker came off a pass from Marissa Redmond (Ajax, Ont.) when a clearing attempt was caught in the slot.
Second-year netminder Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orilla, Ont.) earned her sixth win on the season for Waterloo (6-10-2) by stopping 33 shots.
Dana Carson (London, Ont.) fell to 0-5 while turning aside 30 of 32 shots for Ryerson.
Special teams was huge in this one as both teams combined to score two goals on 11 power plays.
Both teams traded chances, including at least three 2-on1 opportunities for the Rams in the second frame. The Rams best chance early came with just under two minutes left in the opening period. Bouwhuis was down with a wide open net during a scramble after a tip by Emily Popelar (Toronto, Ont.) but Melissa Wronzberg (Thornhill, Ont.) was unable to coral the puck for a clean shot.

January 13 - Windsor @ Guelph
GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team secured their eighth straight victory today as they toppled the Lancers 2-0 to complete their double header weekend at the Gryphon Centre. The win boosts the Gryphons to 15-3-2 on the season.
Amanda Parkins (Kitchener, Ont) opened the Gryphon scoring early in the second period for her 15th goal of the season. Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont) provided the insurance goal in the third for her ninth on the season. Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, Ont) recorded the shutout.
Guelph opened early in the first with two quick shots to establish control of the game that would carry them through the first. Despite several strong Lancer opportunities, Windsor remained unable to push anything past Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, Ont) on all power play opportunities to end the first period scoreless. The Gryphons were also unable to establish any offensive rhythm as they were forced to leave the rink after 20 with eight shots on net to Windsor's seven.
The stalemate in the first ended quickly in the second as Amanda Parkins (Kitchener, Ont) split the Lancer defence to bury the puck over Robinson's blocker side to give Guelph the lead at 1:05.
Desperate to end their dry streak, the Lancer power play unit returned to the ice for their fifth appearance but were once again unable to force it past Nehring who recorded four saves in the second to preserve the Gryphons' lead. And while the Gryphon offence continued to create strong scoring opportunities throughout the second, they were unable to find their insurance goal to end the period ahead 1-0.
In the third period, Kandace Charbonneau (Guelph, Ont) was sent to the box for the second penalty of the period. Just as the Lancers were building momentum in the Gryphon zone, Amanda Parkins intercepted the puck to file it out to Pinkerton in the neutral zone who carried it in on a 2-on-1 shorthanded opportunity to rail the puck off the bar to extend the Gryphon lead to two.
The Gryphon penalty kill unit was instrumental in securing Nehring's shutout as they forced the Lancers to drop 0-9 on power play opportunities.
The Gryphons look to continue their OUA dominance as they host the York Lions next Thursday (Jan. 17). The puck drops at 7:30 pm in the Gryphon Centre.

Western @ Brock
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. — After turning in a losing effort the night before against the Guelph Gryphons, the Mustangs looked to bounce back against the tenth-place Brock Badgers. Thanks to a flurry of offense in the second and a three-goal performance from Stacey Scott, the Mustangs came out victorious, topping the Badgers 6-3.
The opening frame started off slow, with neither team able to find the back of the net. With less than three minutes left in the period, Cassidy Gosling potted the first goal of the game, giving the Mustangs the one goal advantage.
However, not to be out done, just over a minute later Brock evened the score after Leigh Vanderveen found a way to beat Western’s Kelly Campbell.
Determined to get back to their winning ways, the Mustangs came out firing in the second period. At 2:10 of the period, Jessica Ross scored to give Western the lead once again.
And the scoring would continue, as Casey Rosen scored her second of the season off a pass from Marlowe Pecora at 4:42 of the frame to give the Mustangs a two goal cushion.
Mustangs forward Scott extended that lead when she notched her first of the game at 12:27 of the second period. And just over two minutes later she would score again to give the Mustangs a commanding 5-1 lead.
Before time expired, the Badgers would add a goal from Katie Howlett to cut the Mustangs lead to 5-2 at the end of the second.
The Mustangs struggled with discipline throughout the game, as the team racked up 16 penalty minutes to Brock’s eight. Fortunately for Western, Brock failed to capitalize on any of their power play opportunities.
Brock would strike first in the third period as their leading scorer Jessica Fickel found the back of the net, bringing her team within two. However, that’s as close as it would get as Scott scored with less than two minutes to play, securing both her team the win, and herself the hat trick.
Campbell stopped 31 shots in the victory, giving her 11 on the season, the second most in the OUA.
The Mustangs will be on the road again next weekend when they travel to Toronto to take on the Ryerson Rams on Saturday, January 19. The puck will drop at 2:00 p.m. The team then returns to Thompson Arena on Sunday afternoon for a contest with Laurier at 4:00 p.m.

Ryerson @ Laurier
WATERLOO, Ont. (January 13, 2013) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team's depth was on display once again on Sunday night as they got goals from five different players to defeat the Ryerson Rams 5-2 at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
Fourth year forward Paula Lagamba of Toronto, keyed the Hawks attack as she scored the game-winning goal while also chipping in with an assist. For Lagamba, the two points gives her four for the weekend, nearly doubling her offensive output leading into the Christmas break.
"Right now, I'm playing better than I was before the break," commented Lagamba on her play. "I'm playing with a little more confidence and I'm hoping that's going to carry on to the next stretch of games to close out the season."
Four other Hawks also found the scoresheet on multiple occasions on Sunday as Jessie Hurrell of Palgrave, Ont., and Andrea Shapero of Toronto, also had a goal and an assist while Emily Kekewich of Kingston, Ont., and Tammy Freiburger of Wingham, Ont., each had two assists.
Erika Thunder got the start in goal for the Hawks and made 20 saves to earn her 10th win over the season.
In a matchup between the first place and last place teams in the league, the start was predictable in this one as Laurier jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes thanks in large part to a 21-5 edge in shots.
Ryerson turned their play around in the second period and got on the board with a powerplay marker from Janella Brodett of Edmonton, three minutes into the period.
Midway through the frame, with the Hawks still struggling to regain their form from the first period, head coach Rick Osborne called a timeout that seemed to spark his team. Off the ensuing faceoff, Laura Brooker of Fergust, Ont., picked up the puck in the high slot and fired one past Ryerson goaltender Dana Carson of London, Ont., to restore Laurier's three goal cushion. For Brooker, the goal is the 13th of the season for her, good for the team lead, and also gives her 49 goals for her career.
The two teams would also trade goals in the third as Monique Cornett of Potsdam, N.Y., and Shapero found the back of the net for the Rams and Hawks respectively.
With the victory, the Hawks improve their record to 16-1-2 on the season while the Rams fall to 2-15-1.
Laurier will now head on the road for five of their last six contests, beginning next weekend with a pair of crucial games against the Windsor Lancers on Friday night and the Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon.

UOIT @ York
The York University Lions women's hockey team squared off against the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks on Sunday afternoon, falling by a final score of 2-1 in a shootout at Canlan Ice Sports.
The low-scoring affair required a shootout to determine a winner after neither team could find the back of the net in the five-minute overtime period. It took four rounds as both goalies continued their strong play, but finally UOIT's Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.) put one behind York goalie Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) for the winning marker.
Lee finished with 26 saves on 27 shots and another three saves in the shootout, while her counterpart, Cassie Charette (Ottawa), made 31 saves on 32 shots and was perfect in the shootout.
The first period saw both teams play undisciplined hockey, as half the period was played five-on-four. However, neither team was able to capitalize on any of their power play opportunities due to some exceptional play by both goalies.
At the 12:00 mark the Ridgebacks finally opened the scoring on a goal by rookie forward Samantha Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.). That was the only tally in the period, and the Ridgebacks held a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.
Both goalies continued to play well in the second, making key saves to keep the game at bay. However, the Lions would prove to be the better team and they would be rewarded for their efforts when fourth-year forward Katrina Tollis (Hamilton, Ont.) registered her first goal of the season to make it 1-1. That was all the offence in the frame and it was tied heading into the third.
The third period solved nothing as both goalies continued to shine.
York defender Jennifer Petkovics (Mississauga, Ont.) and forward Kristie Wilson (Hamilton, Ont.) were credited with the only assists in the game for the Lions.
The Lions' next game will take place on the road against the Guelph Gryphons on Thursday (Jan. 18) at 7:30pm. They will be back at home to face the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, Jan. 26. Puck drop is scheduled for 2pm.

Waterloo @ Toronto
Kelly O’Hanlon and Callie Bazak each scored in the shootout to lift the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team to a 3-2 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday, January 13 at Varsity Arena.
With win lifts the Blues to 10-8-1 on the season, one point back of Windsor for fifth place in the OUA.
Jacqueline Scheffel (Waubaushene, Ont.) and Ragan Danford (Madoc, Ont.) scored during regulation time. Scheffel now has 12 points on the season, and is joined by Amanda Ricker (Ottawa) and rookie Taylor Day (Ilderton, Ont.) who both picked up assists in the game.
Sophomore goaltender Krista Funke (Regina) came into today’s action with the top save percentage in the OUA (0.935). Funke was solid throughout the contest, making 25 saves for the win.
The Blues came out strong, dominating the first period and taking a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Scheffel opened the scoring when she crashed the net on a 2-on-1 and managed to put home a rebound off Ricker’s shot. Danford increased the lead late in the frame on a similar play. Day lugged the puck up ice and fired a shot on goal, the rebound came straight to Danford, who buried it past Warriors goaltender Rebecca Bouwhuis.
Waterloo would cut the lead to one early in the second period just after their powerplay had ended when an unfortunate bounce in the slot got lost between the skates of a Blues defender and was snapped home by Kelly Toms.
Second-year defenceman April Looije (Mississauga) and Funke combined for several solid defensive plays to maintain the lead throughout the middle stanza, but the Blues were unable to hold off the Warriors in the third. Funke made brilliant saves during a Warriors powerplay, but was helpless to stop Kelly MacLean at the side of the net, who buried a rebound to tie the game 2-2.
The teams would trade chances in overtime, with Funke making more game-saving stops, and Danford and Day each creating quality opportunities, but neither team could grab the winning goal and the clock wound down to send the game to a shootout.
O’Hanlon shot first for Toronto, making a slick deke to her forehand to beat Bouwhuis. Bazak then skated in as the Blues second shooter, and powered a slap shot top corner to set the stage for Funke to deny MacLean’s attempt and give the Blues the win.
Despite the loss, MacLean was named the game’s second star. Sheffel and Danford were named stars one and three, respectively for the Blues.
The Blues return to action on Saturday, January 19, when they travel to Kingston, Ontario to take on the first place Queen’s Gaels. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.
