January 26 - Laurier @ York
Undeterred by a two-goal deficit in the second period, the York University Lions women's hockey team rallied back against the nationally-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26), ultimately upsetting the Hawks with a 5-4 overtime victory at Canlan Ice Sports.
The overtime heroics came from fifth-year forward Kristie Wilson (Hamilton, Ont.), who received a pass in the neutral zone, skated through the defenders, and sniped the top corner just over the blocker of Golden Hawk goalie Kayla Brown (Lively, Ont.) to win the game for the Lions at 2:54 of the overtime period. The unassisted goal was Wilson's third of the season.
The result came after early struggles saw the Lions trail 3-1 just over halfway through the second period. They started to close the gap with a goal from Andrea Joyce (Oakville, Ont.), her third of the year. She followed the puck behind the net after narrowly missing a tipped shot and swung it around for a wraparound goal assisted by Kristen Barbara (Mount Hope, Ont.) at 12:57 of the second, bringing the Lions' to within one goal of the Hawks.
The Lions equalized the score late in the period after a long chip pass from Joyce sprung Lisa Stathopulos (Toronto) into the offensive zone. Stathopulos handily deked by the defender to get inside and fired a hard shot past Brown low to the glove side, tying the game with her eighth goal of the season at 17:11 of the second period. Joyce and Lindsey Cochrane (Brampton, Ont.) both earned assists on the play, and the teams went into the third period with a 3-3 tie.
The Lions leapt to an early lead in the final frame off of a hard-skating effort from Sarai Whitty (Kingston, Ont.) got her into inside shooting position where she sniped the top corner on Brown's blocker side, giving the Lions the 4-3 lead just over one minute into the period. Jamie Endrizzi (Toronto) and Lindsay Brook (Ste Rose du Lac, Man.) assisted on Whitty's first goal of the year.
Laurier immediately intensified its offensive pressure in search of the tying goal, only to be continually denied by outstanding saves from Lions' netminder Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.).
The Hawks finally managed to put one past Lee at 13:05 of the period, as Robyn Degagne (North Bay, Ont.) finished a scrappy play at the side of the net with a wraparound goal while Lee was helplessly tangled in Laurier skates. Paula Lagamba (Toronto) and Devon Skeats (Whitby, Ont.) assisted on the tying goal that sent the teams into overtime at 4-4.
The win was the team's second in a row and ended Laurier's seven-game winning streak. The Lions are now 6-12-3 on the season and remain two points out of the final playoff spot, while the Golden Hawks still sit first in the OUA standings with a record of 18-1-3.
The game had opened with a Lions goal from team captain Chloe Milano (Maple, Ont.), who found the loose puck in a scramble in front of the net off a rebound from Brown and fired it into the bottom corner of the net. Joyce helped loosen the puck in the scramble, and earned an assist on Milano's seventh goal of the season.
York continued to look strong, with top-notch playmaking from Stathopulos and Barbara resulting in a power play opportunity that rung just off the post before a series of untimely penalties resulted in an extended 5-on-3 power play for the Golden Hawks.
Despite selfless, dedicated shot blocking from Milano, who continued to get in the way of pucks after visibly being hurt by the first shot, and Kim Ramcharan (Brampton, Ont.), who blocked a shot off her face mask, the Golden Hawks managed to equalize with a 5-on-3 goal for Brittany Crago (Stouffville, Ont.). A hard rebound bounced right onto her stick and she was able to fire the puck past Lee into the top corner glove side. Fiona Lester (Peterborough, Ont.) and Tammy Freiburger (Wingham, Ont.) assisted on the tying goal.
Laurier jumped into the lead early in the second, as Danielle Im (Toronto) picked a Maureen Mommersteeg (St. Thomas, Ont.) saucer pass out of the air on a 2-on-1 break and knocked it past a sliding Lee low to the short side at just 2:16 of the second.
The Golden Hawks extended their lead with another power play goal, this time from Freiburger, who finished a passing play behind the net with a wraparound goal at 10:36 of the second period. Andrea Shapero (Toronto) and Jessie Hurell (Palgrave, Ont.) earning assist on the goal that extended the Hawks' lead to 3-1.
Lee's outstanding play was critical throughout the game, including a highlight-reel second-period save on Freiburger after a weak Lions' giveaway and a tough deke gave Freiburger a free path to the net. Another tricky skating deke put Freiburger behind Lee with an open shot at the net, but in a testament to her natural athleticism, Lee managed to sprawl backwards and slam her stick down on the goal line, drawing the puck into her arms and covering it, preventing the Hawks from near-certain goal, and the game remained tied going into the third.
Lee finished with a total of 35 saves on 39 shots. Brown, by contrast, managed just 19 saves on 24 total shots. The Lions penalty kill was also a critical element of their game, as their selfless play through early-game penalty trouble helped minimize the damage, holding Laurier's power play to just two goals on nine power plays.

Ryerson @ Western
LONDON, Ont. — After losing their last game against the first place Laurier Golden Hawks, the Mustangs were looking to get back into the win column this weekend. First up were the struggling Ryerson Rams who sit in last place in the OUA standings.
Despite trailing early, the Mustangs managed to score four unanswered goals to come back and earn the 4-1 victory at Thompson Arena.
In the early minutes of the first frame, Ryerson’s Jessica Hartwick was called for a tripping penalty. However, the Mustangs failed to capitalize on the opportunity, and instead Rams defenseman Mackenzie Manning scored a shorthanded goal to give her team the early 1-0 lead.
Midway through the first, Katelyn Gosling scored to even the game at 1-1.
The game would remain tied until late in the second period when Tara Cation was fed a pass from Marlowe Pecora to put the ‘Stangs up by one.
The Mustangs strong offensive play would continue in the third period as Jessica Ross shot the puck past Ryerson’s goaltender Emma Crawley at 2:25 of the frame.
Undisciplined play from the Rams would prove to be their downfall as four of their 11 penalties would come in the third period. Although the Mustangs failed to convert on earlier powerplay opportunities, at 9:12 of the third with the man advantage, Gosling scored her second goal of the game to put the Mustangs up 4-1, which is the way the game would end.
Mustangs goalie Olivia Ross turned away 16 shots in the winning effort.

January 27 - York @ Waterloo
It only took 29 seconds of hockey for the Waterloo women's hockey team to pick up a crucial two points in the OUA standings as the Warriors shut out the Lions 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the CIF Arena.
Kelly Toms (Ennismore) and Marissa Redmond (Ajax) scored 29 seconds apart while Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) was steady in net as the Warriors picked up their eighth win of the season and their second straight 2-0 win. The black and gold are now 8-11-3 on the season and move four points ahead of the York Lions (6-13-3) for the eighth and final playoff spot and are just one point back of seventh.
The Warriors outshot the Lions 20-16 through two periods of play but they could not solve Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) who looked unbeatable in the early going. The same can be said for Bouwhuis who made several key saves throughout the opening two frames to keep the game locked at zeros.
The Warriors came out firing in the final period and would be rewarded at the 3:09 minute mark as Toms broke away and found herself one-on-one with Lee and made no mistake with her third goal of the season. 29 seconds late the Warriors added an insurance marker as Redmond batted home a loose puck after some gritty work by Jessica Tracey (Woodslee) and Sarah Wolfe (Waterloo), who each picked up an assist on the goal.
Bouwhuis and the steady Warrior blue line did the rest shutting down the York offense to secure the 2-0 victory and an all-important four point weekend.
The Warriors return to the CIF next weekend for a pair of home games against Western on Saturday and Brock on Sunday. Both games are at 2pm and can be seen live on the Streaming Sports Network (SSN Canada).

UOIT @ Laurier
WATERLOO, Ont. (January 27, 2013) - The No. 3 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team picked up their 19th win of the season on Sunday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex as they defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 2-1 in a shootout.
Team captain Fiona Lester of Peterborough, Ont., playing in her final regular season home game, scored the only goal of the three-round shootout on a beautiful deke to beat Ridgebacks netminder Jessica Larabie of Pickering, Ont.
"It was definitely an exciting way to end it," said Lester of the goal. "The whole game wasn't my best game by far but it was exciting to finish it well."
"What a fitting finish for her last home game," commented Laurier head coach Rick Osborne. "She's got that move down. She goes at high speed and just knows how to finish."
Laurier, who trailed most of the game 1-0 thanks to the outstanding play of Larabie, forced the shootout on a third period tally from Andrea Shapero of Toronto. UOIT's Jill Morillo of Whitby, Ont., opened the scoring in the contest just two minutes and 14 seconds into the first period.
The Hawks, who dominated the game for long stretches, outshot the Ridgebacks 49-18 on the night, including 5-0 in the overtime period where Laurier spent much of the extra five minutes in the UOIT zone. However, Larabie was there on every occasion, finishing with 47 saves, the most shes made this year.
As for the Hawks netminder, Erika Thunder of Buffalo Point, Man., made her first start in two weeks and finished the game with 17 saves to pick up her 11th win of the year.
The win was an important one for the Hawks as they give themselves a small amount of breathing room atop the tough OUA conference. Laurier (19-1-3) now sits three points clear of the second place Guelph Gryphons (18-3-2) and five points clear of the Queen's Gaels (17-3-2) with just three games remaining and Osborne knows that his teams last three games will be a battle.
"That's why tonight was so huge because in the loss column were three points ahead of Guelph," stated Osborne. "We have Brock and Guelph next week so the plan would be to go in and beat Guelph head on and that would put us in pretty good shape heading into Queen's."
Laurier will kick off their three-game road trip to close out their regular season on Saturday against the aforementioned Badgers. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m. at the Seymour-Hannah Centre in St. Catharines.

The first period would test Mustang goaltender, Kelly Campbell, as Western was unable to keep Toronto out of their end. Campbell would save shot after shot to keep the Blues shooters at bay. The Mustangs would struggle to keep the puck in the Varsity end until late in the frame. Power-play opportunities would allow the Mustangs to get some shots on Toronto’s netminder, Krista Funke. Scott broke past the Toronto defenseman and would score with five seconds left in the frame. The Mustangs would take their lead into the intermission and would look to extend it in the third.
Both teams would experience penalty troubles in the third, with Western being scored while on the penalty kill.
