W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: UOIT clinches first playoff berth in school history
The Waterloo women's hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to the Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at the CIF Arena.
With the loss the Warriors drop to 8-12-3 on the season but got some help from Toronto who defeated York 4-3 which keeps Waterloo in the eighth spot with 19 points, four ahead of York. With the win the Mustangs improved to 17-5, good for fourth spot in the OUA.
Kendra Deller opened up the scoring for the Mustangs when she slid home a rebound between the legs of Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) at 16:23 of the first period. The goal would snap Bouwhuis' shutout streak of 159:13 dating back to Waterloo's game against Windsor on January 20.
Nearly midway through the second period Marlowe Pecora would add to the Mustangs lead when she netted the second goal of the contest, giving the Mustangs the 2-0 advantage.
Western would extend their lead to 3-0 early in the third as Madison Turk put home her second goal of the season on the powerplay. Waterloo would add a late goal by Emma McMillan (Hastings) but it would be too late as Turk would fire home her second into the empty net, making the final 4-1 for the visiting side.
Bouwhuis allowed three goals on 24 shots while Mustang's goalie Olivia Ross was the busier of the two netminders making 29 saves on 30 shots.

York @ Toronto
Callie Bazak’s two goal effort led the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team to a 4-3 win over the visiting York Lions on Saturday, February 2 at Varsity Arena.
The win improves the Blues record to 14-8-2 on the season and they remain fifth in the OUA, five points back of the Western Mustangs.
Bazak’s (Peterborough) two goals moved her into the team lead with 13 so far this season. Jacqueline Scheffel (Waubaushene, Ont.) and rookie forward Taylor Day (Ilderton, Ont.) also scored for the Blues, while Kelly O’Hanlon (Markham) notched two assists to give her a team-leading 26 points in 24 games.
Aurora native Nicole Kesteris was solid in net, making 34 saves for the win.
The Blues struck early, scoring on their first shot of the game just 31 seconds into the contest. The goal was Bazak’s first of the evening, as she took a pass from Sonja Weidenfelder (Toronto) on the rush and snapped it off the post and in.
York would answer right back though on a goal from Sarai Whitty, who poked a loose puck past Kesteris at 18:07 to tie the game. The Lions then jumped out in front on the powerplay late in the period, with Chloe Milano jamming in a rebound to put York up 2-1.
The game went back and forth all night, and Toronto grabbed the lead in the second period on unanswered goals from Day and Scheffel. Day struck with seven minutes remaining in the frame on a wrap-a-round goal, and Sheffel scored three minutes later when she corralled the rebound off a point shot and buried it to give Toronto back the lead.
After York fought back to tie it once again on a goal from Lisa Stathopulos, Bazak potted her second of the night. With the Blues on the powerplay, the fifth-year forward swatted home a bouncing puck to put the Blues ahead for good.
Kesteris backstopped the team the rest of the way to a 4-3 victory.
York goaltender Megan Lee made 23 saves in a losing effort.

February 3 - Brock @ Waterloo
The Waterloo Warriors clinched a playoff spot for the third time in franchise history with a 2-0 shutout win over the Brock Badgers on Sunday afternoon at the CIF. The win, Waterloo's ninth of the season, ensures that the York Lions cannot catch the Warriors for the eighth and final playoff spot.
The Warriors improved to 9-12-3 on the season while Brock dropped to 3-20-1. Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) made 27 stops for the shutout while Kelly MacLean (St. George) and Katie Dods (Kemptville) scored the Warrior markers to clinch the victory.
It was the Badgers who came out with jump in their legs following the opening faceoff but the Warriors weathered the early storm and tilted the ice in their favour. Waterloo would have several quality chances on the power play including a point blank chance for Marissa Redmond (Ajax) but Brock goalie Claire Shaw (Rosemount) turned the opportunity aside. Waterloo held a slight advantage in shots 11-7 after the first.
The Warriors would open the scoring at the 12:08 mark of the second period as Kelly MacLean (St. George) batted home a loose puck for her fifth of the season. Emma McMillan (Hastings) picked up the lone assist on the marker as the Warriors went into the dressing room up by one after two frames.
Brock again came out firing in the third period looking for the equalizer but Bouwhuis continued to stand tall for the home side. Following a penalty to Katie Howlett (Burlington) the black and gold would find the insurance marker on a beautiful tip-in goal by Katie Dods (Kemptville). Dods was unmarked in the slot and tipped in a Sarah Endicott (Toronto) point shot past a helpless Shaw. The Dods marker sealed the victory and first trip to the playoffs for second year head coach Shaun Reagan.
"It was a great team win today and our attention to the details made the difference. We have work to do but we'll enjoy the moment," commented Reagan. "It has been great to see our program heading in the right direction and we are continuing to build momentum."
Bouwhuis, who picked up her third shutout in four games was solid all game long making 27 saves while Shaw allowed two goals on 23 shots.

Ryerson @ York
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams women's hockey team surrendered three goals in the second period and could not find the score sheet as the York Lions skated to a 3-0 win over the Rams on Sunday afternoon.
The Rams dominated possession early on in the first period but couldn't translate that into offensive chances as they registered just two shots on goal.
Starting goaltender Emma Crawley (Herring Cove, N.S.) kept the Rams in it with some key saves but Katrina Tollis (Hamilton, Ont.) finally got one past her to give York a 1-0 lead at 5:59 of the second period.
Kiri Langford (Collingwood, Ont.) tapped in a cross-ice feed at 15:32 to double the Lions lead to 2-0.
The Rams found themselves on a 5-on-3 late in the frame but a flurry of penalties late in the period negated their opportunity and handed the Lions a 5-on-3 of their own.
A point shot from Lindsay Brook (St. Rose du Lac, Man.) found its way through traffic with just 17 seconds left in the period to give the Lions a 3-0 lead which they nursed through the third period to come away with the win.
Crawley stopped 17 of 20 shots faced while York's Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) stopped all 16 Ryerson shots to earn the shutout win.
The Rams went 0-for-3 on the power play and York converted on 1-of-4 man advantages.

Ragan Danford and Taylor Day had two points each, and Krista Funke posted a shutout to lift the Varsity Blues Women’s Hockey team to a 3-0 victory over the visiting UOIT Ridgebacks Sunday, February 3 at Varsity Arena.
The win improves the Blues regular season record to 15-8-2, as they put a stranglehold on fifth place in the OUA with only one game remaining.
Danford (Madoc, Ont.) and Day (Ilderton, Ont.) were the offensive stars in a tightly contested, defensive game. Danford grabbed two goals, while Day had a goal and an assist. Mississauga native April Looije chipped in from the blueline with two assists of her own.
Sophomore goaltender Krista Funke (Regina) added to her OUA-leading 0.934 save percentage by making 18 saves for her second shutout of the year en route to being named the game’s first star.
Both goaltenders were solid throughout the first two periods, as the two teams fired a combined 31 shots at the net to no avail.
Day had several quality scoring chances in the second period, on one occasion taking a stretch pass up the middle from Looije, and breaking in on goal, but was unable to get the puck past Ridgeback’s goaltender Cassie Charette.
Danford also broke in alone on a shorthanded chance early in the third period. Her shot squeaked through Charette, but dribbled wide of the goal.
The two Blues forward would make good on their opportunities shortly after though, with Day striking first. After a Blues penalty ended to give Toronto a brief powerplay, the rookie forward received a gorgeous stretch pass from Looije, fought off a defender, and raced in alone before chipping the puck over Charette’s outstretched glove.
Danford doubled the lead with 7:20 remaining, when she swatted at a rebound from Day’s initial shot and floated it over the goalie’s head into the net.
The veteran forward added her second of the game into an empty net to cement a 3-0 victory for the Blues.
Rookie goaltender Charette made 29 saves for the Ridgebacks despite the loss.
The Blues will play their final game of the season this Saturday February 9, when they host the Brock Badgers at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is 4 p.m. sharp.

However, neither team was able to capitalize until 19:05 when, Gryphon’s center, Hillary Walsh (Nepean, ON) netted an exciting backhand, power play goal on Laurier’s screened goaltender. Queen's @ Western
LONDON, Ont. — The Western Mustangs hosted the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs forced the Gaels into a last minute tie, pushing the game into overtime, however the Gaels overcame the Mustangs and took the 3-2 victory.
The Mustangs started the opening minutes of the first period in their own end and shortly found themselves in trouble. The Gaels’ shot from the point deflected off of multiple players, and snuck past Mustangs netminder, Kelly Campbell. The Gaels' goal would be scored by Morgan McHaffie and assisted by Mary Coughlin.
While the remainder of the period would see more equal play, the Gaels still managed to find the net more thanks to several deflections. The Gaels would receive a penalty late in the frame giving the Mustangs the power play, but Western would also receive a penalty in the late seconds of the first. Both teams headed into the first intermission shorthanded, with the Gaels still up by one.
Western managed to kill off the penalty in the opening minutes of the second period and would also find success in the offensive zone minutes later. Western’s assistant captain Casey Rosen would break past the Gaels defense opening up an opportunity for Western to tie the game. Rosen would score Western’s first of the game thanks to a pass from defenceman Madison Turk.
Western would receive a penalty late in the dying minutes of the period, and this time the Gaels would receive the later penalty. Once again both teams would head to the change rooms down a player.
The Mustangs could not seize any chances on their opening power play of the third period, so the score remained tied 1-1. Western was once again short-handed due to a body checking call on rookie Kryshanda Green, and the Gaels would take advantage of this. Queen’s would score on the power play seconds later with the goal scored by Mary Coughlin with assist from Sydney Cudmore.
With the Mustangs trailing again and things looking bleak, Green would redeem herself with a goal in the dying seconds of the game. Green snipped the puck past the Gaels goalie with the assists coming from Katelyn Gosling and Ally Galloway. With the latest goal, Green is now in fourth place in the rookie scoring race in the OUA and assistant captain Gosling is holding first overall in scoring for defencemen in the OUA and in the CIS.
With regulation over and the game tied, extra minutes would be required. Western would get the first couple of shots in the overtime period, but the Gaels would use the deflection once again to put the puck past Western’s Campbell and the Gaels would prevail by a score of 3-2.
The Mustangs will take on UOIT next Saturday February 9 at 3:00 p.m. in Oshawa.
