WATERLOO, Ont. (February 21, 2013) - The No. 4 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team finds themselves on the brink of elimination after losing Game 1 of their OUA Semifinal series to the No. 10 Western Mustangs 2-0 on Thursday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
The Hawks, despite firing 45 shots on Western netminder Kelly Campbell of St. Thomas, Ont., were unable to find the back of the net as they lost the opening game of their semifinal series for the second consecutive season.
"I think the game was won in the first forty minutes," commeted Laurier head coach Rick Osborne after the game. "Our team really struggled for the first two periods. We haven't had a really good sixty minute effort since playoffs started."
The Mustangs were able to pull out of the win thanks to goals from Cassidy Gosling and Katelyn Gosling, both of London, Ont.
In the first game of the rematch of last year's OUA Championship, Laurier got off to a strong start in this one, firing the first five shots on Campbell in the game. However, the Mustangs quickly recovered thanks to three consecutive powerplay opportunities and opened the scoring just as the second one expired. On a broken play, Cassidy Gosling threw the puck on net and it deflected off the post, off of Laurier goaltender Erika Thunder's (Buffalo Point, Man.) skate and into the net to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
Another powerplay opportunity early in the second period would allow Western to pull ahead by two goals. Katelyn Gosling fired a shot from the high slot that hit a stick and deflected past a helpless Thunder to give the Mustangs an insurance marker heading to the third period.
Laurier's offence would come to life in the third period as they fired 27 shots at Campbell. However, even with a lengthy 6-on-3 advantage late in the period, the Hawks could not find a way to beat the Western goaltender and now head to London trailing 1-0 in the best-of-three series.
"I think we have a lot more that we can give," said assistant captain Caitlin Muirhead of Waterloo, Ont., on what the Hawks need to do in Game 2. "I think everyone can look at themselves in the mirror and we know that our backs are against the wall on Saturday and we have to bring it every shift and not just play 20 minutes in the third period."
Game 2 of the series will go Saturday night at Thompson Arena on the campus of Western University. Puck drop is schedule for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be webcast on Mustangs TV Live.
