W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Hawks score three third period goals in win
The No. 7 ranked Wilfrid Laurier women's hockey team rebounded from their second loss of the season on Thursday night by defeating the Brock Badgers 3-2. The Golden Hawks poured 45 shots on the net, and were able to tally three goals in the third period.
Laurier was unable to put the puck past Brock's Claire Shaw of Rosemount, Ont., in the opening frame as she made 13 saves in the period. The Badgers were able grab the lead late in the period when Brianne Veal of Sault Ste Marie, Ont., scored her first goal of the season giving Brock a 1-0 heading into the second period.
Laurier turned up their attack in the second frame, throwing 21 shots on Shaw. The Hawks didn't neglect their own end either as their defence limited Brock to only one shot on net. However, Laurier still couldn't beat the Badgers netminder despite holding a 34-7 edge in shots after 40 minutes.
The third period was a little more action-filled. Laurier's Tammy Freiburger of Wingham, Ont., evened the score at 1-1 with her second goal of the season at the midway point of the third. However, Brock was able to pull ahead 2-1 just 57 seconds later, when Laura Neu of Ayr, Ont., tallied her third career goal.
Trailing 2-1 with just under seven minutes remaining, Laurier's Haley Baxter of Waterloo, Ont., knotted the score up at 2-2. The Golden Hawks were given a great opportunity to grab a late lead when Brock took a tripping penalty. Caitlin Muirhead of Waterloo, Ont., would take advantage, giving Laurier the lead and the eventual win. Muirhead added one assist for a two point night while Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., also had a multi-point game with two helpers.
Kayla Brown of Lively, Ont., made 16 saves in net for the Hawks (7-1-1) while Shaw finished the game with 42 for Brock.
Laurier will be back in action at home on Sunday when they take on the No. 8 Guelph Gryphons (5-2-0) at 7:30 p.m.
